World Refugee Day – Building a collaborative network: experience, action and research.

What's happening?

Leeds Trinity University is hosting an in-person event to celebrate World Refugee Day 2022. We will affirm and recognise the value of refugees and Asylum seekers and provide an opportunity for both students and colleagues to understand the needs, challenges and vulnerabilities of refugees and Asylum seekers in an engaging and creative way, which facilitates meaningful reflection and action.

More specifically, this event is designed, intentionally, as an act of hospitality for Leeds Trinity University to welcome community groups, refugees and Asylum seekers on campus and to facilitate their input in the programme of events in an inclusive and respectful way that complements the institutional commitment to equity at both a policy and academic level.

Leeds Trinity University seeks to build a sustained relationship with our partners in the community, to look for shared interests and collaborative opportunities which contribute to social justice in our city. Our guest speaker Professor Jacqueline Stevenson MBE will discuss how a shared research endeavour to elevate the voices of the refugee community in academic spaces can be achieved through sensitive partnership working.

The event will include:

• An introduction to the event from Chijioke Ojukwe and Dr Tamsin Bowers-Brown

• Lunch

• Viktoriia Slyvka, a Ukrainian student and artist will share a welcome song

• An Eritrean Coffee Ritual with Trhas Gerezigher

• Hope, Dreams and Aspiration: Refugees and Education – Mr Abdul Rahman Timbo Jalloh, founder of Community Leeds After School Study Support and former principal Education Officer, Children’s Services and International Arrivals Education Officer

• Nature, Integration and Community – Dr Ryad Alsous, a Syrian refugee

• Researching with Refugee Communities – Professor Jacqueline Stevenson, MBE
