What’s happening?

To mark International Women’s Day, Leeds Trinity University will be hosting an online event with Dr Lindy-Ann Blaize Alfred, Senior Advisor in EDI at Advance HE – ‘Ain’t I a woman!’

In 1851, a woman of African descent, Sojourner Truth – born Isabella Baumfree, women’s rights activist and abolitionist – stood in front of a group of white women’s rights activists and asked the titular question: ‘Ain’t I a woman?’.

Her speech touched on areas of equality, the overlooked humanity and sisterhood represented by women of African descent, and the lack of visibility and alliance of white women to this cause. Has this changed nearly two centuries later?

In 2023, Dr Lindy-Ann Blaize Alfred asks the same question, and looks to Sacheen Littlefeather, Marsha P Johnson, Audre Lorde, Kimberley Jones and our attendees for answers.

Fuelled by the energy that drives the activism of those that have gone before her, this talk is an opportunity to begin reflecting on issues which continue to impact our move to equity, encouraging the audience to reflect on their ‘why’.

Following the talk, there will be time for a Q&A, where attendees will be able to ask questions.
