Leeds Trinity offers free Digital Coding course to tackle digital skills gap

Leeds Trinity University is delivering a free taster course in digital coding, designed for individuals wanting to change career or upskill.

The course starts on Tuesday 2 June 2020 and is made up of four workshops introducing web development and its basic components. Each workshop is two hours in length with different learning objectives. Once participants have completed the taster course, they will be invited to join the successive component course which includes: HTML and CSS, Programming with JavaScript, Source Control and Development.

Industry experts will deliver the workshops through online teaching and practical exercises and will be able to support individuals applying for web development and coding job applications and interviews.

It is being delivered through [re]boot; a £3 million project which offers free courses for individuals who want to upskill, gain new skills and qualifications, and enter employment in the Leeds city region. It is funded by the European Social Fund and managed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership.

Professor Margaret A House OBE, Vice-Chancellor at Leeds Trinity University, said: “We are delighted to be involved in [re]boot and offer support to individuals wanting to upskill and learn during this uncertain time. The introduction of our free digital coding course has been developed in partnership with industry professionals to address the digital skills gap in Leeds, support the needs of local employers, and ensure that individuals complete the course with industry-relevant skills and confidence.”

Nav Chohan, Chair of the West Yorkshire Consortium of Colleges (WYCC) and Shipley College Principal, said: “[re]boot provides a unique, fully-funded opportunity to inspire, retrain and upskill individuals and those furloughed with sector specific skills that will improve their future career options. During this period of uncertainty, WYCC are committed to putting measures in place to ensure that we continue to provide training at a time when flexibility and access are key.”

The course aims to support individuals wanting to change career or upskill and progress in their career by teaching them the basics of web coding and highlight the career opportunities in web coding and the digital industry.

Leeds Trinity University is developing a range of short courses in various sectors including digital and creative. Participants should be 18 years plus and eligible to work in the UK with a desire to change career or upskill in their current role.
