About this course

We'll work with you to ensure that the emotional and social development of the children you work with is embedded in all that you do, helping you to understand your influential
role in young children’s lives.

You'll learn how experiential, play-based learning supports young children's development and how, as an effective practitioner, you can have a positive impact on children’s development and learning. Teaching in early years is dynamic, and you'll learn the professional skills related to planning, teaching and assessing, as well as how to manage a setting where children and adults work together in learning.

You'll gain an understanding of the transition to Key Stage 1 and then into Key Stage 2 and develop knowledge of both the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum at Key Stage 1.

The Early Years 3-7 programme will enable you to develop the right expertise and values to provide outstanding learning experiences for all children.

School-based training

Over the course of the three-year programme you will complete a minimum of 24 weeks of assessed school-based training, along with additional focus visits. In the first and second years your school-based training is eight weeks; in the final year it's ten weeks. At each stage of training, you will be supported by an expert school mentor, as well as a University link tutor.

In the first year, you will gradually take on some of the teacher's role by working with small groups of children, setting activities in areas of provision and moving on to teach whole group lessons.

Throughout the second and third year, you will build up the amount of time you spend planning, teaching and assessing children until you have gained the independence needed to be successful in your first year of teaching.

In each year of the programme there are four key strands which structure your learning and professional experience at University and in school.

  • Curriculum Knowledge and Pedagogy

  • Teaching in the Primary School

Students will study a combination of core and option modules across their three years of study.

 

Modules by Year

Foundation Year

Core modules (students are required to take): 

  • Academic Skills and Studying with Confidence
  • Project
  • Introduction to Education: Learning and Teaching
  • Introduction to Children and Families

You will only study these modules if you are studying for the degree with Education and Childhood foundation year (4 years)

Year 1

Progression requirements: 120 credits from Foundation Year. In addition, students must meet the minimum entry requirements for progression to a linked degree programme with QTS:

  • GCSE English Language, Maths and Science at grade 4/C (or Equivalent)
  • Professional Skills Tests in Maths and English
  • Students will also be required to successfully complete the University’s selection process for this programme including an interview, enhanced DBS check and 'fit to teach' assessment.

Students unable to meet the requirements for progression on to a linked Primary Education with QTS degree but have passed the foundation year, may opt to progress onto a linked Childhood and Education degree.

Year 2

Core modules (students are required to take): 

  • Developing the Early Years Curriculum (3-7) 1
  • Becoming a Teaching Professional
  • School-Based Training 2 (there is a prerequisite for study of this module)
  • Developing the Early Years Curriculum (3-7) 2
  • Understanding Inclusion
  • Introducing Practitioner Enquiry
  • Educational Project (students may request or be advised to enrol on this module as a replacement for the School-based training module in that year)
Year 3

Core modules (students are required to take):

  • Enhancing the Early Years Curriculum (3-7)
  • Enhanced Enquiry Project
  • Educational Debates
  • School-Based Training 3 (there is a prerequisite for study of this module)
  • Educational Project (students may request or be advised to enrol on this module as a replacement for the School-based training module in that year)

Fit to train to teach

All entrants to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses are required to be declared as 'fit to train to teach', you will be asked to complete a health assessment as part of the entry conditions to the programme.

Interview Information

Applicants who meet the entry criteria will be invited to interview. You will need to attend an Interview Day before we can offer you a place on this course.

DBS Requirements

Applicants who are offered a place and accept will be contacted regarding the DBS application, which will be completed via an external company.

Student Finance

UK Home Students:

Tuition fees cost £9,250 a year for this course in 2021/2022.

Part-time tuition fees will be pro-rated accordingly to the number of credits you're studying. Depending on government policy, tuition fees may rise with inflation in future years.

Tuition fees for 2022/23 entry will be set in summer 2021.

Living costs, e.g. accommodation, travel, food, will also need to be taken into consideration.

Leeds Trinity offers a range of bursaries and scholarships to help support students while you study.

International Students, including EU Students:

Tuition fees cost £12,000 per year for this course starting in 2021/22.

Part-time study is not available for international students on a Tier 4 Student Visa. 

Additional costs

We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:

  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own.
  • Field trips may occur during this course and they will be either fully or partly subsidised by the University. More details will be provided at the start of the course.
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure.
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online
