With tuition loans, maintenance funding and subject-specific bursaries available, there’s plenty of support to help you take that next step into teaching.

Tuition fees

For UK Home students, PGCE tuition fees for 2025-26 are £9,535. Fees for 2026-27 will be announced in late 2025.

Fees may increase slightly each year in line with inflation or government policy.

UK students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of their fees, repaying it gradually once they’re earning above the repayment threshold. For more details on repayments, visit the Student Loans repayment page on gov.uk.

If you prefer to pay your fees directly, you can find guidance in the Student Financial Regulations or email finance@leedstrinity.ac.uk for advice.

For international students, the tuition fee for 2025–26 is £15,000.

If you require a Student Route Visa, you’ll need to show evidence that you can cover your tuition fees and living costs before your course begins.

Maintenance loan

Eligible full-time UK students can apply for a maintenance loan to help with living costs during your PGCE year.

You’ll apply through Student Finance England (or the relevant funding body in your home nation).

How much you receive depends on your household income and where you live while you study.

Bursaries and scholarships

Depending on your subject and qualifications, you could be eligible for a tax-free government bursary to support your training.

Bursaries are available for a range of Secondary PGCE subjects, including:

Biology
Chemistry
Computing
English
Geography
Languages (French, German, Spanish)
Maths
Physics
Religious Education

The amount you receive depends on your subject and degree classification. You can check the current bursary rates on the Get Into Teaching website.

If you're eligible for a bursary, we - or our partner - will confirm this in writing before you start your course. You don't need to apply for one separately.

Some subject scholarships are also available through professional associations such as the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarships scheme - you need to apply for these through the relevant provider.

Other costs to consider

You may need to budget for a few additional expenses during your training year, such as:

enhanced DBS check – required before starting your placement
travel costs to and from your placement schools
teaching resources such as stationery, printing or classroom materials
optional textbooks and wider reading to support your studies
