Leeds Trinity University’s Money Advice team has won the Innovative Project Award at the National Association of Student Money Advisers (NASMA) Awards for its efforts to address key challenges affecting students’ financial wellbeing.
The team was recognised for an ongoing research project investigating how financial wellbeing influences Level 4 students’ decisions to suspend their studies, and what could be done to improve outcomes and ensure students are retained on their courses.
‘Coining Success’, the winning project, is carried out by the Money Advice team alongside student researchers Grace Cooper and Zacc Katusiime. This is an example of Leeds Trinity’s commitment to career-led education and student co-creation, ensuring learners are active contributors to their experience at university.
The research project is funded by the Co-Creation Seed Fund, a scheme designed to empower staff and students at Leeds Trinity to work together on collaborative research, tailored teaching and learning and community engagement projects.
The judging panel commended the University’s “proactive and research-driven approach, including securing funding to investigate key issues affecting students” and creating “paid research opportunities for students, with the potential to influence practice across the sector in the coming years.”
The research project will centre students’ lived experiences to inform tailored approaches to supporting students with financial challenges, so they can focus on their studies and complete their degrees successfully. As students are involved at all stages of research, the outputs will help develop meaningful interventions and inform sector-wide understanding of the impact of financial wellbeing on student continuation.
