Award winning staff and students

We're incredibly proud of our staff, students, and alumni who continuously produce the highest quality work. RTS Yorkshire Awards

Congratulations to Leeds Trinity alumni Harry Tombling, Fraser Whur, Talia Frankland, and Jacob Hemingway, who won a Craft Award for Camerawork at the Royal Television Society Yorkshire Student Awards which took place in March this year. 

The prize recognises their work on a documentary produced for a final year project which explores the revival of vinyl and how people enjoy and celebrate it in the present day – from record store owners, to DJs, and music lovers.

Alice's award win

Leeds Trinity University alumna Alice Young has been named National Newsreader of the Year at the Commercial Radio News Awards for the second time.

Alice, who graduated from Leeds Trinity with a Master’s in Journalism in 2020, now works as a Senior Broadcast Journalist for Global in their London newsroom. She features across a range of their platforms but is most commonly heard delivering morning news bulletins on Heart Breakfast, the UK’s biggest commercial radio breakfast show, and presenting on LBC News.

Oz's national poetry prize

Oz Hardwick, Professor of Creative Writing at Leeds Trinity, has been awarded the 2024 Charles Simic Poetry Prize for his poem “Witness Statement”.

Established in memory of the acclaimed Serbian American poet, the prize celebrates poetry that, while strikingly individual, enters the territory in which surrealism and visceral physicality coexist within the rules of their own uneasy logic.

Study Abroad opportunities

Ella Mather – Gothenburg University, Sweden

Ella wanted to study abroad to explore journalism from new perspectives, and it brought her confidence, independence, and unforgettable stories to share.

She studied Media Systems Around the World, PR Journalism and Public Opinion, and Human Rights in Policy and Practice. These modules were very different from the practical, hands-on approach at LTU. They were more academic and essay-based, but they offered valuable insight into global perspectives on media and society. Experiencing these different academic styles broadened her understanding of journalism’s role around the world.

Socially, her time in Gothenburg was unforgettable. These experiences helped her form lasting friendships and fully immerse herself in Swedish student culture.

Student projects

We believe collaboration is the catalyst for innovation and cultivating successful careers. That’s why we place an emphasis on working with peers - often across disciplines - and embed industry partners into our courses. You’ll step into our studios, armed with the latest equipment, surrounded by like-minded people eager to collaborate and innovate alongside you, whether that’s working on a news report, designing a game or recording a podcast. Think about collaborating with students with a range of knowledge and skills on a creative writing project, news report or computer game. Exciting and relevant learning are what we are all about! 

Here are just some of the projects that our students have been involved in over the past year.

Working with Actors Workshop

Leeds Trinity University welcomed acclaimed director Debbie Howard for a one-day Working with Actors workshop in partnership with Screen Yorkshire’s Connected Campus. Students from Film, Television Production, and Digital Media Production gained practical experience in directing performance, learning to communicate with actors, shape emotional beats, and build creative trust.

Using scenes from Debbie Howard’s award-winning short film Safe, students observed Debbie’s approach in real time, then stepped into the director’s role themselves, experimenting with blocking, motivation, emotional transitions, and constructive feedback. This structure allowed them to see how performances evolve across multiple takes and how directors refine their vision collaboratively. The workshop offered students industry-aligned insight into the realities of working with talent. It strengthened their skills in communication, preparation, and directing actors, all of which are essential for careers in film, television, and digital production.

This special workshop reflects Leeds Trinity University’s commitment to providing authentic, high-value learning experiences that connect students directly with leading professionals in the screen industries.

English and Creative Writing staff and students involved in global art project
Congratulations to our Creative Writing academics and students who are featured in the global art project TELEPHONE – a digital, creative reimagining of the children’s game of whispers, where a message is passed on via diverse art forms, including poetry, painting, music and film. 
Now at its third and most ambitious edition, TELEPHONE connects 1,395 artists from 65 countries, creating one of the largest collaborative contemporary artworks in history.
Representing Leeds Trinity are academics, Oz Hardwick, Professor of Creative Writing, and Dr Amina Alyal, Senior Lecturer in English and Creative Writing, as well as MA Creative Writing student William Coniston, and PhD student Gill Connors. Their poetic responses – inspired by paintings, sculptures, music and film – demonstrate the power of creativity to transcend borders and connect people worldwide.
We’re delighted to see our academics and students contributing to a project that celebrates global collaboration, artistic innovation, and storytelling through multiple forms of art.

Photography: UNVEILED

'Unveiled', a photography exhibition created and curated by our Level 6 Photography students.

The exhibition explores emotional honesty and expressive depth, looking introspectively and creating connections between the photographer and the viewer. Find out more about our Level 6 Undergraduate Photography exhibition from our Photography Technical Demonstrator, Adam Mitchinson.

LTYou: Ey Up Leeds

Our Level 4 Film, TV and Photography students recently spent 6 days preparing this live broadcast, all about the amazing things you can can do in Leeds on a budget. Have a watch and preview the sort of project you could be working on when you join Leeds Trinity.

Tungsten Media visit

Recently, our TV, Film and Digital Marketing students visited Tungsten Studios, one of the largest purpose-built film and photography studios in the heart of Leeds.

Our students were treated to a tour of the studios and took part in creating a TV advert for a new Crisp flavour to air during a World Cup Campaign, from scratch with the help of AI and virtual production. AI tools included an AI image generator and a full virtual production space.
