Professor Edward Spiers, a distinguished academic and eminent military historian, has received Honorary Fellowship at Leeds Trinity University today (Wednesday 17 July).

Edward received his award at a Graduation ceremony on campus this morning, alongside students from the University's Psychology, Criminology and Sociology programmes.

Edward is one of the leading historians of his generation, publishing 19 books and numerous chapters and articles, about everything from Victorian history and the Great War, to US peace operations and chemical and biological warfare. He is a frequent contributor to contemporary debates about warfare, diplomacy and global politics, and has contributed to many committees and advisory boards.

Over the years, he has contributed in many ways to the development of research at Leeds Trinity University as the institution strives for Research Degree Awarding Powers. He has sat on Research Committees, giving up many hours to interview prospective PhD students and has assisted in the supervision of doctoral students.

On receiving Honorary Fellowship to the University, Edward said: "It is a privilege and a pleasure to receive an Honorary Fellowship from a dynamic and evolving university that is producing impressive cohorts of graduating students."

Having worked in academic since 1975 and currently as Professor of Strategic Studies at the University of Leeds, Edward will celebrate 45 years at the University of Leeds next year.

He is one of six outstanding individuals in their fields receiving Honorary Fellowships from Leeds Trinity University this week. Other recipients include Priest and broadcaster Reverend Kate Bottley, entrepreneur Ben Lawton, journalist Hannah Thaxter, Screen Yorkshire CEO Sally Johnson and educator Simon Gallacher.

Professor Margaret A House OBE, Vice-Chancellor at Leeds Trinity University, said:

"It is an absolute pleasure to present Edward with an Honorary Fellowship today, and to celebrate his academic achievements over the last 45 years. Edward has been a good friend and valued contributor to Leeds Trinity for many years and is fully deserving of this award."

Edward received his Honorary Fellowship from Rt Hon John Battle, Pro-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University.
