On Wednesday 6 September, two Leeds Trinity University teams will compete in a T20 Cricket match in memory of former Leeds Trinity Journalism student, Matthew Huggett.

A group of people in white uniforms playing cricket on a green pitch.

Matthew, from Essex, sadly passed away in December 2013 when he was just 21. He was diagnosed with Metastatic Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of spinal cancer, which prevented him from completing his Sports Journalism degree.

What's happening?

A staff team will be taking on the Alumni Lions Cricket team to compete for The Matthew Huggett Memorial Cup.

Leeds Trinity sports teams have played against each other for several years to remember Matthew and compete for the Matthew Huggett Memorial Cup. In 2014 and 2015, the Men's Rugby League team competed against the Men's Rugby Union team in a Cross Code game. From 2016, we’ve organised a T20 cricket match where students, staff and alumni have competed against each other.

All money raised from the match will go to support Macmillan Cancer Support who both assisted and treated Matthew during his illness. All are very welcome to attend and support the teams, and charitable contributions can be made on the day.
