About this event

This is the seventh lecture in the 'Beyond the Dark Clouds' lecture series - "Young Leaders: 'Stella Maris Youth Leadership Awards'". This lecture will be given by students and staff from Notre Dame Sixth Form College.

A group of students and staff will explain and discuss the importance of the Stella Maris Awards that have been designed and led by Catherine Herring at Notre Dame. Inspired by the work of the Jubilee Centre Framework for Character Education in Schools (2017) and Virtues for Catholic Schools, a research project for the Diocese of Leeds (2018), Catherine and colleagues created a student leadership award based upon the virtues aimed at developing ‘good character’. The award, titled the Stella Maris Leadership Award, is based upon the Intellectual, Moral, Civic and Performance Catholic virtues, which are also accessible by all students regardless of faith. Ultimately the aim is for each member of the College community to practise the virtues to become ‘my best self’, to develop good sense or practical wisdom which will help support them to navigate life. Through weekly tutorial and Philosophy, Theology & Ethics sessions, students learn about the virtues and how these can be acquired through deliberate action. These acts are recognised daily by staff who nominate students for a college commendation. This allows them, over time, to achieve the three levels of award; bronze with its focus on hope fulfilled in service. Silver, its focus on faith fulfilled in leadership and finally gold; love fulfilled by innovation.

The aim of our inaugural lecture series 'Beyond the Dark Clouds' is to support the university, with its Catholic roots, to have a voice in the public square about justice, law-enforcement, the police, the nature of education, business ethics, spirituality, leadership and contemplation and the arts. Open to all, we encourage you to be a part of these public discussions about how to humanise our world and to bring about the conditions that enable the flourishing of all individuals and groups.
