This is the fifth lecture in the 'Beyond the Dark Clouds' lecture series - "Augmenting Our Minds? Neurotechnologies and the Common Good". This lecture will be given by Professor Neil Messer, Professor of Theological Bioethics at Baylor University, Texas, US.
Professor Neil Messer completed his PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, before studying theology and ethics in Cambridge and at King’s College London. A minister of the United Reformed Church, he has worked in pastoral ministry, ministerial training and academic posts. Since 2009 he has been at the University of Winchester, where he is Professor of Theology. His research interests are focused on theological bioethics, neuroethics and the science-theology dialogue.
He is the author of six books including Science in Theology (Bloomsbury, 2020), Theological Neuroethics (Bloomsbury, 2017) and Flourishing (Eerdmans, 2013), as well as several edited volumes and numerous articles and chapters.
About the lecture series
In our second lecture series entitled ‘Beyond the Dark Clouds: Prophetic Voices from Around the World,’ we will be continuing our theme of education for hope. This year we will be focussing on how to humanise the world through the study of ethics, philosophy, technology and artificial intelligence as well as enquiring about the nature of values and mission in the contemporary higher education environment.
This series is a way of keeping our Catholic roots alive within our academic portfolio as well as contributing to debates in the public square concerning some of the most pressing ethical issues of our times. Please join us for these free lectures as we seek to try to heal a fractured world.
