What helps people perform under pressure, remain motivated, and experience the benefits of physical activity? How do thoughts, emotions, relationships and team dynamics influence performance and wellbeing? Sport and exercise psychology uses scientific evidence to investigate these questions.

On this BSc (Hons) Psychology in Sport and Exercise degree, you will explore human thought and behaviour through psychological theory, research and real-world application. You will gain a broad foundation in psychological science while developing a particular focus on sport and exercise.

About this course

Across your specialist modules, you will explore motivation, performance anxiety, stress and adaptation, group dynamics, resilience and wellbeing. You will evaluate psychological approaches and interventions, considering how evidence can inform responses to challenges across sport and physical activity settings.

Throughout this degree, you'll develop scientific, professional and transferable skills in designing psychological research, analysing quantitative and qualitative data, evaluating evidence and psychological explanations, applying psychological theory to sport, exercise and physical activity. You'll also evaluate approaches to motivation, performance, resilience and wellbeing. Will be able to respond to real-world problems through evidence-informed solutions.

You'll also enhance your critical thinking and problem-solving, written, verbal and visual communication, collaboration and professional practice skills alongside ethical decision-making. These skills are valued in psychology-related professions and across sectors including sport, health and wellbeing, education, research, public services, charities and business.

Professional Experience

Experience matters. That's why we embed professional experience within the majority of our standard undergraduate degrees.

How does it work?

Our Careers and Placements team will work with you to find an experience or help you arrange your own, whether that's in Leeds, another part of the UK or even abroad. You will be able to take part in a series of workshops, events and live ‘employer challenges’ to boost your confidence and prepare you for your work experience.

You could have an opportunity to gain degree-relevant professional experience, build your knowledge of career sectors and secure valuable employer references and industry contacts. This experience will help you to shape your career decisions and find the right path for you.

Students have undertaken professional experience in the health and social care professions, supporting children with Leeds Children’s Services, supporting the rehabilitation of people with drug dependency and shadowing psychologists at NHS Leeds. We work with a wide range of organisations, including Leeds Mind, Leeds Women’s Counselling and Therapy Service, Oxfam and Samaritans.

Programme delivery

Your time on campus, learning through in-person teaching, is at the heart of your academic experience and the way we deliver our programmes. This is supported and further enhanced by additional engagement activities and opportunities provided online and through digital teaching materials. This blended approach seeks to ensure a positive learning and teaching student experience.

Your programme of study has been carefully designed around a three-phase model of delivery:

  1. Preparation: You will be given clear tasks to support you in preparing for live teaching. This could include watching a short-pre-recorded lecture, reading a paper or text chapter or preparing other material for use in class.
  2. Live: All your live teaching will be designed around active learning, providing you with valuable opportunities to build on preparation tasks, interact with staff and peers, and surface any misunderstandings.
  3. Post: Follow-up activities will include opportunities for you to check understanding, for staff to receive feedback from you and your peers to inform subsequent sessions, and for you to apply learning to new situations or context.

Preparation, Live and Post teaching and learning and the digital materials used will vary by course, but will be designed to help you structure your learning, take a full and active part in your course, and apply and test your developing knowledge and skills.
