Public health is a rapidly evolving field shaped by social, economic and environmental challenges at local, national and global levels. This MSc explores the factors that influence population health and equips students with the knowledge and analytical skills to understand, evaluate and respond to contemporary health challenges.

Through the study of epidemiology, health promotion, policy, leadership and research methods, you will develop the ability to critically assess evidence, design effective interventions and contribute to positive change across a range of health, wellbeing and community settings. With a strong emphasis on health equity and social justice, the programme prepares graduates for diverse careers in health, policy, research, community development, international organisations and beyond.

About this course

The growing complexity of public health challenges presents a need for professionals with the skills to understand and respond to health issues at a population level.

This course addresses that need, equipping you with the knowledge and expertise in areas such as epidemiology, health promotion, policy and research to design and deliver effective public health interventions.

Our approach combines academic study with applied learning, giving you the opportunity to engage with real-world public health challenges and build practical research and analytical skills.

Epidemiology, Data Science and Research Practice in Public Health

This module develops the epidemiology, biostatistics, data analysis and research skills needed to investigate public health issues and inform evidence-based practice. You will explore population health data, research methods and public health evidence, developing the ability to critically evaluate findings and make evidence-informed recommendations for public health action.

Contemporary Perspectives, Policy, Leadership and Systems

This module explores the policies, leadership approaches and systems that shape public health practice in the UK and globally. You will examine the factors influencing population health and health inequalities, while developing skills in policy analysis, leadership, partnership working and evidence-informed decision-making to address contemporary public health challenges.

Global Public Health and Health Inequalities

This module explores global public health challenges and the social, economic and environmental factors that shape health. You will examine health inequalities within and between countries and consider international strategies to improve population health and promote health equity from a global perspective.

Health Promotion, Behaviour Change and Public Health Interventions

This module explores theories and approaches to health promotion and behaviour change. You will examine models of behaviour change, evaluate public health interventions, and develop the skills to design and assess initiatives that improve health and wellbeing in communities.

Public Health Dissertation

This dissertation module enables you to undertake an independent research project on a contemporary public health issue. Supported by academic supervision, you will apply appropriate research methods and analytical techniques to investigate a topic of interest, critically evaluate evidence, and demonstrate your ability to contribute to public health knowledge and practice.

Academic requirements

Entry requirements for January 2027 entry:

An honours degree (2.2 or above) in a related area such as health sciences, biomedical sciences, sport and exercise science, psychology, sociology, social sciences, international development, public policy, nursing, health and social care, or other related disciplines. OR
An honours degree (2.1 or above) in a non-related area such as health, community development, wellbeing or social care.
Alternatively, we will consider applicants with at least three years of relevant experience
International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements.

Leeds Trinity Alumni Discount

Some Leeds Trinity graduates are eligible for a tuition fee discount on postgraduate courses of up to 50%, excluding PGCE Delivery Partner Model and Lead Partner Model, and Masters by Research courses. You will need to achieve a 2:2 or above in a Leeds Trinity undergraduate course to qualify. This discount may be subject to change for 2027/28 entry.
