Prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) and deepen your understanding of the legal profession with expert guidance from academics who bring real-world experience from the legal sector. 

You’ll learn from active legal researchers whose insights will support you in making informed, evidence-based decisions about your career. With a wide range of optional modules available, you can tailor your studies to suit your interests and explore different areas of legal practice. 

Throughout the course, you’ll develop critical, research-led perspectives on the legal profession and its specialisms, equipping you with the knowledge and confidence to thrive in your chosen field. Your learning will be enhanced by access to cutting-edge facilities, including our newly developed mock courtroom in Leeds City Centre, designed to simulate real-world legal environments. 

This course offers a flexible, blended learning experience, combining on-campus teaching with online delivery. You’ll be supported every step of the way, with expert tutors, structured feedback, and a personalised induction that prepares you for both face-to-face and digital learning. The benefit of the online element of the course means that the intensive exam preparation elements can be done flexibly and at times that suit you best.  

You’ll be part of a vibrant academic community with access to university resources and support services. You’ll also be assigned a personal tutor who will guide you throughout your postgraduate journey, helping you stay focused and make the most of your experience.

Core modules

You will be required to take four core modules and will choose two option modules from the list below.

Solicitors Legal Knowledge – Core

This module develops practical competence in applying the law across all core practice areas required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). Fully aligned with the SQE assessment specification and regularly updated, it covers key subjects including contract and tort law, criminal law and practice, land law and property practice, trusts, business law, dispute resolution, professional conduct and ethics, legal services, public and EU law, wills and estates, and solicitors’ accounts.

The Legal Professions of England and Wales – Core

You'll gain an overview of the legal professions in England and Wales through a critical lens, and consider topics such as the origins of the professions and why that matters, traditional and new ways of working in the professions, elitism and equality and diversity concerns, as well as mental health issues across the branches of the professions. In addition, you'll have the opportunity to explore what it means to be an ethical legal practitioner and what the role of social justice is in legal practice.

Solicitors Legal Skills – Core

This module develops competency in Legal Skills such as Advocacy, Interviewing and attendance note-taking/legal analysis, Case and matter analysis, Drafting, Research and writing.

You'll develop these skills in practice areas: Criminal Litigation, Dispute Resolution, Property Practice, Wills and Intestacy, Probate Administration and Practice, and Business Law and Practice.

The above skills and practice area knowledge, together with Ethics and Professional Conduct, are covered to develop the competencies required for the second part of the Solicitors Qualification Examination (SQE2).

Dissertation – Core

This module introduces approaches to legal research, alongside key practical and ethical considerations, delivered through a series of workshops. You will design a research project of your choice within an area of law and develop it into a dissertation. Throughout the module, you will be supported by the module leader and an assigned supervisor, who will guide you in completing a dissertation, appropriately presented and supported by references to relevant primary and secondary legal materials and academic literature.

Property Practice – Specialist pathway

This module aims to provide you with an understanding of immigration in practice and the processes and procedures relevant to tribunal cases in this area. You'll learn how to run a case from taking instructions, to seeking solutions and ultimately preparing Tribunal paperwork to seek appropriate remedies. Practical legal skills, as well as transferable organisational and case management skills, will be developed. Once you have covered the Foundational Land Law Principles, you will then focus on the various stages of the conveyancing transactions, from preparatory work to exchange and completion. You'll also have the opportunity to consider delays and remedies in relation to property transactions and explore the law relating to Leaseholds.

Employment Practice – Specialist pathway

This module aims to provide you with an understanding of employment law in practice and the processes and procedures relevant to Employment Tribunal claims. You'll learn how to run an employment law case from taking instructions, to seeking solutions, and ultimately preparing Tribunal paperwork to seek appropriate remedies. You'll develop practical legal skills as well as transferable organisational and case management skills as you cover key issues such as employment status and issues arising from it, the formation, content, and operation of employment contracts, issues arising from the termination of contracts, as well as equality and discrimination in employment.

Family Practice – Specialist pathway

An understanding of family and child law in practice and the processes and procedures relevant to cases in this area will be explored in this module. You'll learn how to run a family/child law case from taking instructions, to seeking solutions and ultimately preparing Court paperwork to seek appropriate remedies. Practical legal skills as well as transferable organisational and case management skills will be developed as you cover key issues such as adult relationships and their breakdown, including divorce and financial orders; the law surrounding children in both private and public law cases, as well as issues around domestic abuse. You'll also explore funding options for family law cases and court processes.

Immigration Practice – Specialist pathway

You'll be provided with an understanding of immigration in practice and the processes and procedures relevant to tribunal cases in this area. You'll learn how to run a case from taking instructions, to seeking solutions and ultimately preparing Tribunal paperwork to seek appropriate remedies. You will develop practical legal skills as well as transferable organisational and case management skills as you cover key issues such as differences in immigration status, the right to abode, the situation of EEA nationals, and family reunion issues. You'll also explore particular legal complexities around Asylum seekers and refugees, and issues arising for students or in the employment context. You'll also learn about the law relating to deportation and removal, and will focus on tribunal processes throughout.

Company Law and Practice – Specialist pathway

In this module, you'll cover the key principles of corporate law in England and Wales and be introduced to the concept of the company as a separate legal entity before considering limited liability, the corporate veil, a company’s constitution, as well as the role of directors who manage a company on a day-to-day basis, and shareholders who have invested in the business. You'll be introduced to the internal processes and procedures that need to be followed within a company, together with associated reporting requirements and liaison with Companies House. We'll encourage you to think critically about issues such as minority protection, majority rule, and the separation of ownership and control to enable you to apply these key concepts to problem-based scenarios.

  • An honours degree (2:2 or above) in any of the following subjects:

    • LLB Law
    • LLB/BA Law with another discipline (where 50% of credits studied are from legal subjects)
  • The programme is also open to graduates who have achieved a pass in PDGL/GDL/LLM Law Conversion course.

  • Applicants with overseas qualifications require a degree in law from their jurisdiction at the equivalent of a 2:2 classification. 

This course is not available to students on a Student Route Visa.

If you studied your undergraduate degree at Leeds Trinity University, you may be eligible for a discount of up to 50% on the cost of your tuition fees.

Leeds Trinity Alumni Discount

Some Leeds Trinity graduates are eligible for a tuition fee discount on postgraduate courses of up to 50%, excluding PGCE Delivery Partner Model and Lead Partner Model, and Masters by Research courses. You will need to achieve a 2:2 or above in a Leeds Trinity undergraduate course to qualify.

The cost of the SQE examination itself is not included in the fees and it is up to you to book and pay for your SQE examination. You'll have the flexibility to decide when to do this with some likely opting to complete the entire course before considering the examination whereas other will do SQE 1 at the January sitting and the SQE after the Semester 2 element. How to apply

This course is not available to students on a Student Route Visa.

There is no official closing date for applications, but the course will be closed when it is full. We therefore encourage you to make your application as early as possible.

Please ensure you complete the application form in full and supply all the required supporting documentation when you make your initial application. Incomplete applications may be rejected.

What happens next?

Our admissions team will acknowledge receipt of your application by email. Where applications are submitted but references are still in progress, admissions will wait for the reference(s) to be received and then will process it, and forward to the relevant Programme Leader within five days of receipt of the reference(s).

The Programme Leader will make a decision based on your application. You may be asked to provide a reference to demonstrate your academic and non-academic experiences, or you may be invited to attend an interview. If you are successful and made an offer, the conditions will be outlined in your offer letter. 

Applications will be acknowledged within five working days. Applicants will be contacted within 15 working days with a request for additional information, an invitation to an informal interview or an application decision.

You should accept or decline your offer by emailing admissions@leedstrinity.ac.uk.

If you accept, you'll need to prove you satisfy the conditions outlined in your offer letter.

You may be asked to present the relevant supporting documentation in person to the student information point on campus - if originals are not needed, you’ll be contacted and given details of how to provide the supporting documentation.
