Year 1
Introduction to Child Psychology, understand how children develop and form relationships with others, and how experiences during the formative years can impact upon a person later in life.
Childhood Society and Social Policy - the changing status of children over time and key developments in law, policy and practice relating to children, young people and families and tensions which may exist.
Protecting children - explores the complex issue of safeguarding children. It will consider current law and policy initiatives and high profile child abuse cases.
Working with families - you will develop your understanding of effective practice with children and families and examine styles of communication and engagement with others as part of this.
Families, Inequalities and Social Justice - assesses broad issues around inequalities, including poverty, gender, ethnic, and social class differences and their impacts.
Professional Development Placement - you will develop employability skills and complete a professional six-week placement of your choice (home or abroad).
Year 2
Understanding Family Dynamics - looking at the complex nature of families and how they are supported by a range of professionals.
Children Rights - exploring the rights of children, their welfare and autonomy within a UK and international perspective.
Assessments and Interventions - understand the key professional skills needed for assessing and intervening in children’s lives and multi-agency working.
Research Methods - understand how to research and its use for professional settings and policy making.
Violence in the Family (optional) - this looks at the impact of violence in the family and others in the household affected.
Children with Additional Needs (optional) - develop awareness of the vulnerabilities that children with ‘additional needs’ may face and services which can offer support.
Year 3
Therapeutic Interventions with Families - you will develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of a range of therapeutic interventions including direct work with children and families.
Child and Youth Justice - key debates around supporting, regulating and controlling young people.
Reflection and Supervision - you will develop essential knowledge, skills and understanding of the supervisory process to promote good practice in work with children and families.
Difficulties Families Face - you will be given the opportunity to explore the range of problems that families can face while children are growing up and the approaches needed to support and empower families.
Research Project - you will have the opportunity to complete an independent investigation within an area of personal interest.
