1960sOriginally, Leeds Trinity University was opened as two separate colleges situated on the same campus. The two principals worked closely together and shared a joint ethos as well as academic, administrative and pastoral resources.

During the 1960s, there was great demand for teachers. Schools were placed under a lot of pressure with the post-war baby boom – when the birth rate in Britain rapidly rose after World War Two and the death rate plummeted.

“The College buildings on the Brownberrie Lane site were not completed in time for the first intake in September 1966. I received a letter to say that the semester would start in October, and that I would be staying at Rawdon College.” Shelagh Tomkinson, alumni

Educational developments, student needs, and administrative and technical requirements have inevitably led to alterations and extensions to the original buildings. However, the basic plan of the campus remains the same as it did when work began on it in 1965. For the first generations of students, the presence and ministry of the Sisters of the Cross and Passion was an integral part of the academic, administrative and pastoral life of the two colleges.

The altarThere is only one altar in the Chapel in line with the Second Vatican Council insight. It symbolises Christ, Mediator and the New Adam. It reminds us of sacrifice, atonement and communion. It stands separate and as a centre, four-square and focal point. The cube is a symbol of perfection and has reminiscences of the New Jerusalem and associations with the saints.

The altar's base is made from York stone that comes from Yorkshire Abbey. It reminds us that we have earthly loyalties, geography, history and culture as well as heavenly aspirations.
What can I do if I’ve received low levels of funding?Receiving a low amount of funding usually means that the government is expecting your parents to make an income contribution. Discuss with your parents when and how you will receive this contribution, for example weekly, monthly or in a lump sum. The amount could also go direct to your institution, landlord or weekly online food shop depending on what's agreed. You can apply to have your student funding entitlement reassessed if your parents' income drops by 15% or more.

A common student finance myth is that you are classed as a mature student if you're over 21 years old.
