About this course
During your Foundation Year, you will undertake modules to enable you to enhance your academic skills and equip you with the tools you’ll need to study with confidence. You’ll carry out a personal project so you can study an area of interest related to your chosen future subject specialisation.
You’ll be introduced to various types of media, both in theory and practice, and will develop an understanding of the skills and concepts required by the creative industries. You’ll explore historical approaches towards images and the social power they embody and will undertake an individual or group project to produce work that reflects the culture of 'image'.
Following successful completion of the Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto the first year of our English Literature BA (Hons) degree.
Through this course you will learn how to read and analyse poetry and fiction, as well as gain an understanding of how to compare past and contemporary texts in the same genres.
You'll have the opportunity to explore literature from the Medieval period to the present day, and you'll look at contemporary topics such as gender and sexuality and postcolonial literature.
We'll teach you the skills and techniques of professional scholarship and literary research, developing your confidence in sharing your knowledge and communicating your ideas.
We'll encourage you to be creative in responding to texts, giving you the chance to communicate your own particular passion for literature. You'll also have opportunities to create your own literature, with optional creative writing workshops in each year of your degree. If your interest lies in English Language and Linguistics, you can choose to follow the optional strand in this subject area throughout your studies.
English at Leeds Trinity has a thriving community of writers, including staff who are published poets and novelists. You'll have the opportunity to take part in our writing events, including an annual Writers' Festival and monthly open mic nights.
Experience is crucial, so you'll complete professional work placements during your degree and we’ll encourage you to think about how you can use your skills, knowledge and interests in a future career.
