About the company
Leeds based marketing company, VISCO Agency, was set up by young entrepreneurs Thomas Haigh and Charlotte Ford in July 2017. Having finished a degree in Marketing and Media at Leeds Trinity University, both Thomas and Charlotte started freelancing alongside their day-to-day jobs. Their passion for marketing led them to create VISCO Agency, and in September 2019, they were joined by fellow Leeds Trinity graduate Danielle Webster.
VISCO Agency focuses on providing marketing and creative services for businesses to improve on their visual communication, with VISCO representing ‘visual’ and ‘communication’. VISCO Agency is built on the ethos of community, therefore many of their clients are small, local businesses. Not only does VISCO Agency offer an array of services – ranging from business rebranding to web design – they also provide an all-inclusive service to avoid clients having to deal with several different companies.
Thomas advised that their biggest hurdle when launching VISCO Agency was advertising the business. He said: “I just thought ’where do we start?’ We didn’t work on our own marketing because we were working on the marketing for our clients.” Thomas also wanted to develop his own knowledge of blogging to aid the business, as well as its clients.
It was at this point that Thomas decided to get in touch with Leeds Trinity, where he was made aware of the Ad:Venture programme which offers support to businesses under three years old. He attended the Leeds Trinity University Ad:Venture workshops: Business Advice Café, Blogging Club – run by academic Liz Cable – and Marketing on a Low to Zero Budget – run by academic Mark Sebright.
These workshops were beneficial for both VISCO Agency and its clients. Thomas applied his knowledge of sourcing cost-effective marketing alternatives and writing blog posts to his own business and his clients. The latter was particularly useful during COVID-19, when several of VISCO Agency’s clients were furloughed, and their social media accounts became their means of communicating.
Alongside this, VISCO Agency works with Leeds Trinity by taking on placement students, and as of June 2020, they have taken on 19 students. Due to Thomas, Charlotte and Danielle’s close connection to Leeds Trinity, they advise that they are “always there to support fellow Trinity students because that’s where it started for us”.
Moving forward, all three directors aim to grow VISCO Agency so that they have a larger team and an office space where they can all work.
Thomas attended several workshops and said: “The Business Advice café was especially useful as it enabled me to network with other professionals from all sectors and build meaningful connections.”
He added: “I would recommend the Ad:Venture Programme to anyone that is starting out, wanting professional advice or the chance to network. New business owners should attend as many of the workshops as possible because they are free and very useful.”
