While studying for his apprenticeship, Ehsan was working for Halifax-based Sia Abrasives, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of abrasive products. Ehsan then moved on to work for Bradford-based Nufarm, a global crop protection and seed technology company, to pursue his passion for chemical engineering.

Ehsan, originally from Bradford, made an impact with his work-based projects throughout his studies. Last year, he received the Dean’s Award, which recognises outstanding students and apprentices at the University. Ehsan’s determination to hone his skills in the West Yorkshire region while pursuing his passion and thus contributing to the regional economy, further establishes him as a strong candidate for the award.

Ehsan Hussain said: “Being shortlisted for the Degree Apprentice of the Year Award is an honour and I am proud of the work I have done and grateful to those who have supported me in my learning journey. The module tutors at Leeds Trinity University were passionate and supportive. Their guidance and feedback ensured I was able to perform to the best of my ability throughout the programme and provided me with the tools I need to progress in my career.”

Clare Dodsley, Work Based Learning Tutor at Leeds Trinity University said: “Ehsan is the perfect candidate for the Degree Apprentice of the Year Award, as it was clear from the start that he took ownership of his learning. As Ehsan already had a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, he aimed for a high level of achievement throughout the course of the apprenticeship. Ehsan was able to demonstrate a wide range of skills, for example his increased confidence in presenting to high-ranking senior officers in the business and developing negotiation skills and dealing with difficult conversations.

“All of Ehsan’s work-based projects enabled him to showcase his skills and benefit the organisation by reducing financial losses through the production process. Ehsan achieved a first-class degree and a distinction for his Level 7 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. We are very proud of Ehsan for being shortlisted at the West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.”

Atiq Malik, Manufacturing Engineering Manager at Sia Abrasives, said: “Ehsan enjoys putting his theoretical knowledge into practice through engineering calculations. He has been impressively curious to seek knowledge and explore engineering developments. His effective communication skills and project documentation greatly contributed to his success. Even with his limited industrial exposure and experience, Ehsan made a significant contribution in the process improvement for the business.”

The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship is designed to provide the essential knowledge, understanding and skills required to operate successfully in a business environment.
