Habiba Al-Muwakkat, Food and Nutrition, 1st Year

I’ve really enjoyed the first year of my course so far. I won an academic achievement scholarship soon after I began, which was really exciting and a great start! I was able to buy a laptop for my studies, and it’s helped to pay for my travel costs since I commute every day from Bradford.

Food and Nutrition is such an interesting subject – I’ve learned about the importance of BMI and calorie intake and how various vitamins and minerals affect the body and I’ve found physiology - the study of how the body’s various systems work together – to be fascinating. My lecturers are great, too, especially my course tutor Lourdes Santos-Mex. She’s an interesting, engaging teacher, she doesn’t talk down to us, and she gives us great feedback.

In some ways, I’m not a ‘typical’ student. I don’t drink or go to clubs and I don’t live on campus, but I still feel like a part of the student community. I’ve made friends from all walks of life and we really enjoy having a coffee and a chat between lectures in the Atrium coffee bar, or grabbing a sandwich in the dining room.

I’m really looking forward to my first work placement this summer. I’m going to be working with primary aged children to help them learn about healthy eating and lifestyles. Elizabeth in The Employer Partnership Office was great; she helped me tailor my CV to make sure I got the perfect placement.

Rosie Connell, Associate Principal Lecturer

There couldn’t be a more exciting time to study in the department of Sport, Health and Nutrition. With the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics just around the corner, interest in our elite sportsmen and women is growing and a host of mini Olympic events in schools, workplaces and the community is taking place.

Our undergraduate sports degrees prepare you for playing your part. Students and external examiners enthuse about the professional nature of our courses. What’s more, you can get ahead of the competition for jobs through the two blocks of professional placement and taking part in the sport and health volunteering programme.

Frequent contact with tutors will challenge and guide you to achieving your ambitions. If you want to make a difference and help create a healthy, happy and active population, join our team of enthusiastic, committed staff and students!

Marcus Myrie, BA Physical Education (Primary) and Sport Development

I chose Leeds Trinity for my Undergraduate Degree because its small size means more time with lecturers. I also liked the course as it includes subjects that I find really interesting such as psychology, sports development and sports injuries. I want to go on to teach PE in schools, and the placements I have had in two separate schools have been great experience, especially in testing the teaching skills you learn about in the course modules.

The workload is challenging but manageable. So I have also enjoyed the regular social events put on by the Students' Union- especially karaoke nights! I have also been involved in university sports such as football, rugby league and cricket.
