Emily Bowe, 1st Year Working with Children, Young People, and Families
I love studying at Leeds Trinity. Even though I don’t live on campus and I’m not a massive drinker, I still participate in all aspects of student life. The sports centre is amazing – it’s great to work off a stressful day with a bit of exercise. I’m thinking about running for student government this year, and I’m also working on setting up a trampolining society. The relatively small size of Leeds Trinity means that there’s a chance for everyone to get involved and make a difference.
I represent Leeds Trinity as a Student Ambassador, which is really good fun (and the money helps, too!). As an ambassador, I lead campus tours, help out at open days and school visits, and represent the university college at UCAS conventions and school events. I want to eventually work with adolescents, so spending time with young people on their journey to university is great experience. I also get the chance to do office work now and then. The hours are really flexible so I can almost always fit in a few hours of work here and there with my academic schedule.
Even though I have a busy work and social schedule, I’m still able to fit in time for a lecture now and again! All joking aside, I absolutely love my course. There are so many directions it can take me, career-wise, and I can’t wait for my first work placement this summer so I can start to explore my choices. My favourite lecturer is definitely the department head, Andy Lloyd. He has tons of real-world experience working with young people and he always has great stories to tell.
Meet Andy Lloyd, Head of Department
The Department for Children, Young People and Families is Leeds Trinity University College’s newest academic department and what a time to open it! There are many challenges in this field of work; recent high-profile events have concentrated the media and political focus on how people work with children, young people and their families. Our suite of Undergraduate degree programmes has been designed to give students the best possible understanding of the theory and practice of working in this field in order to help them enter the children’s workforce when they graduate. Our practical placements in Levels 4 and 5 help in this process.
As Head of Department, it is my job to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need and I and my colleagues are committed to that aim. If you want to help improve the lives of children and families, come and join us! There has never been a better time!
Meet Attiya Rashid, BA Education Studies (2nd Year)
I actually started a degree at another large city-centre university, but quickly found it very impersonal and decided that it wasn’t for me. Then I was recommended Leeds Trinity by a number of people who have graduated from here. Its reputation is outstanding and I really wanted to be apart of it. Now that I am, I couldn’t feel happier about the decision I made.
The Undergraduate Degree I am working towards will allow me to go into the profession of teaching. I believe Leeds Trinity was the best place to study for my ambition to become a primary school teacher. The course also involves work placements, creating plenty of opportunities to work in the environment I am hoping to go into. It’s an opportunity many students don’t get, and I’m so glad I was accepted onto the course to participate on something that will shape my future.
So far my time at Leeds Trinity has been phenomenal. I’ve met some amazing people (students/lectures/staff included) and appreciate the help I’ve received. Now I can clearly see where I want to be in the future, and I am determined to make sure I succeed.
