Meet Brian Bvundura, 2nd Year Business with Marketing
Student life at Leeds Trinity is really good. I play left back for the uni football team. We travel all over Yorkshire for games, and the football socials are top-notch. Like most Leeds Trinity students, I lived on campus for the first year, but this year I’m sharing a house with six other Leeds Trinity students in West Park, right next to Headingley – which is basically student central for all three of the Leeds unis. It’s really cool being part of such a varied and exciting student community. Nights out in Leeds are simply legendary.
I just finished my second work placement where I did events management and planning at a home for learning disabled people in Morecambe. As part of my placement, I organised a trip to the Lake District for the residents. I’d never worked with people with learning disabilities before, and it was a great experience getting to know them all. It couldn’t have been more different than my first work placement, which was with a web marketing company. The varied experiences are going to be really impressive on my CV when I start applying for graduate jobs.
My course is everything I thought it would be and more. My lecturers have real-world experience in industry and they bring that into the classroom every day. They have helped me discover my own talents and interests so that I can really focus my ambition. Everyone says that the size of Leeds Trinity means that lecturers know you by name and offer a personalised experience – and the reason everyone says that is because it’s true.
Meet Professor Keith Johnson, Senior Lecturer
The recent world-wide credit crunch has dramatically demonstrated the state of flux in the business environment. Businesses all across the globe need to adapt and respond to these changed conditions. In order to do so, they need a workforce of flexible thinkers: people who can apply and adapt what they already know to shifting and challenging circumstances.
It is my job as a senior lecturer in Business, Management and Marketing to ensure that the graduates we produce have these skills and abilities. With that aim in mind, we need to set and deliver a challenging curriculum, one that encourages adaptive and innovative student behaviour. Consequently, the Department is trying to deliver more of its material in non-traditional ways and to make the best use of the virtual learning environment to extend and enhance what happens in the classroom. Flexible and adaptive graduates need flexible and adaptive teachers. We need to learn together.
Meet Hitesh Sharma, BA Business graduate
When deciding where to do my Undergraduate Degree I looked at several other universities. But I chose Leeds Trinity due to its size. Because it’s not a massive university the class sizes are smaller, and you really get to develop an individual relationship with your tutors.
It also means that you can really get involved with life on the campus. When I first arrived here, I was much quieter and more reserved, but I soon opened up. Last year, for example, I won the election to be General Secretary for the Students' Union. I’m also working as a student ambassador. I certainly feel I’m a lot more gregarious and outgoing than I was before coming here!
Eventually I want to set up my own business, and I really feel that my course is standing me in good stead. It provides you with lots of extra skills and develops your confidence through the work placements and volunteering opportunities, and I think these things help you stand out on your CV. At first I found the assignments hard as I had been used to sitting exams, but I am now much more comfortable with being assessed in this way.
