The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course is designed in three phases to provide a gradual and supportive induction into teaching.
The course qualifies you to teach the complete Primary Curriculum from 5 to 11 and provides you with an opportunity to pursue a specific area of personal interest and specialism during phase 3.
Throughout all three placement trainees are strongly supported by Leeds Trinity and School-based tutors. Assessment during centre-based training is by a variety of coursework and during School-based training by performance.
Course structure
The Primary PGCE is designed as a one year, full-time course. The course consists of three phases:
Phase 1:
College-based training includes:
- Professional Studies (Behaviour and Class Management)
Curriculum understanding in:
- Reading, Maths 1, Science 1, ICT, RE, Art and Music.
- Weekly serial visits to school-based training 1 placement and a school-based training block.
Phase 2:
College-based training includes:
- Professional Studies (Differentiation, SEN, Gifted +Talented)
Curriculum understanding in:
- Writing, Maths 2, Science 2, ICT 2, DT, Geography, History, PE and MFL.
- Weekly serial visits to school-based training 2 placement and a school-based training block.
Phase 3:
College-based training includes:
- Legal responsibilities
- Professional expectations
- Preparation for career entry
- Developing specialist interest
- Weekly serial visits to school-based training 3 placement and a school-based training block.
Each phase consists of a college-based block and school-based training block, the first running from September until November, the second running till March and the third running till the end of June.
Assessment
In order to be eligible for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you must demonstrate your ability to meet the assessment criteria laid down by Leeds Trinity University College and the Teaching Agency. More information about the National Standards can be found at www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/
Assessment is through graded coursework assignments and School-based training. There are no examinations. Assessments are designed to enable you to critically reflect on practice.
At the end of phase 1, a portfolio of evidence including reflections on the phase 1 work and an essay is to be submitted. School-based training is to be completed successfully to proceed onto the next phase.
At the end of the course, a standards evidence base is to be completed including reflection on Phase 2 and 3 college-based training, school-based training and personal study. School-based training is to be completed successfully at each phase.
Entry requirements
Normal entry requirement for the Primary PGCE is an honours degree at 2ii or above in any national curriculum or relevant subject , GCSE English, Maths and Science at grade C or above, a satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) disclosure and a satisfactory medical check. In order to be able to fulfil the requirements of the course you will need to be able to demonstrate prior experience/knowledge of work/work experience/voluntary work in a primary setting. The interview Process
Stage one – based on application form/GTTR etc; short-listed candidates invited to take part in a group interview which will include a professional discussion on personal goals and educational experiences (similar to undergraduate process), individual English audit and maths test.
Stage two – those candidates selected from stage one are invited to plan a lesson and deliver a teaching episode (part of their planned lesson). They will then be asked a number of questions related to their plan and delivery and write a reflective self audit.
The remaining successful candidates will be invited to take part in an action planning day prior to the start of the programme.
