MA/PGDip/PGCert in Victorian Studies

The MA in Victorian Studies offers postgraduate students a uniquely flexible, wide ranging and affordable opportunity to study the Victorian period.

Overview

The MA is closely linked with the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies which is based at Leeds Trinity University College and involves other universities in the UK and beyond, in a programme of seminars, colloquia and conferences. The Centre is also the base for The Journal of Victorian Culture, which is published in conjunction with Edinburgh University Press.

Duration

The MA can be taken at your own pace, from 12 months (full-time) to three years (part-time). All sessions are held in the evening allowing the part-time MA to be combined with full-time paid work.

Core Modules

The Victorians provides an introduction to Victorian Studies as an interdisciplinary subject, focussing on selected literary texts and historical topics.

Approaches and Methods for Victorian Studies introduces you to a range of theoretical approaches and helps you develop skills in research and analysis.

Option Modules

A selection of the following are offered each year. Module subjects include:

  • Victorian Art and Architecture
  • The Novels of George Eliot
  • The Novels of the Brontës
  • Oscar Wilde
  • Victorian Ethics
  • Contemporary Victorianism
  • Victorian Identities? Gender and Sexual Morality in the Victorian Age
  • The Poet and the Spiritual Tradition
  • The Victorian Railway
  • The Victorians and Religion
  • Music and the Victorians
  • Women and Art in Victorian Society
  • Victorian Conceptions of Nature and the Environment
  • The Victorians and Shakespeare
  • Victorian Childhoods
  • Victorian Imperialism

Assessment

The first core module, The Victorians is assessed by a take away paper at the end of the first semester. The second core module, Approaches and Methods, is assessed by an essay, a portfolio of research skills exercises and an oral presentation. All option modules are assessed by an essay/research essay, to be submitted at the end of the module. Finally, you will submit either a report or a dissertation, which consists of a piece of original research conducted on a Victorian topic of your choice.

Facilities and Resources

Our staff expertise in Victorian Studies covers a broad range. In addition to our library and computer centre, you will have access to primary source material and extensive secondary literature on the Victorian period at the University of Leeds.

Flexible Study

  • Full or part-time study: the MA is a modular degree designed to be taken at your own pace, between one and three years
  • Evening sessions: held between 6.45-8.45pm so that study can be combined with full-time employment
  • Flexible learning: the MA is designed to be tailored to your particular needs. It offers a mixture of taught and research modules where you undertake your own work supported by one to one supervision.
  • Wide range of subjects: in addition to the two broad-ranging compulsory core modules, you will have a wide range of option modules to choose from
  • Chance to undertake supervised research: as part of your degree, you will undertake either a dissertation (12,000-15,000 words) or a research report (8,000 words) on a Victorian topic of your choice
  • Choice of MA, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate: study for shorter periods of time, taking fewer modules, and take the Postgraduate Diploma or the Postgraduate Certificate instead of the MA
  • Pay as you learn: the cost of the MA is phased so you can pay module by module. Course fees are very competitive, about half the standard cost for most taught Masters degrees. Bursaries are also available.

Entry Requirements

  • A good honours degree, either in a discipline relating to the broad area of Victorian Studies, or with some relevant content
  • Successful applicants will usually be offered a place on the basis of an application form, supporting letter, referees’ reports and an interview
