News Experience:

I have had significant experience in television, radio and newspapers. Most recently I have completed a month on air with Bradford Community Broadcasting as part of my diploma. This involved taking on the roles of editor, newsreader and reporter and compiling content for hourly live radio news bulletins. A personal highlight was interviewing a cast member of musical Avenue Q for a radio package. As our coverage was multi-platform I generated written, audio and video content for our website and maintained the news team's presence on Twitter. In May 2011 I also worked as a freelance reporter for The Pulse, covering the local elections in Calderdale, where I interviewed councillors and turned round audio cuts for bulletins against a tight deadline. Earlier this year I also beat off stiff competition to be offered a month-long placement at BBC Radio 4's consumer affairs programme "You and Yours", which I will take up in November 2011. I have previously worked at BBC Manchester on network current affairs programme "Here and Now" and at BBC Radio Lancashire. During my time at university I was head of news at the student radio station, Bailrigg FM. I spent a year on placement at evening paper the Halifax Courier and the weekly Brighouse Echo. During that time I assisted in reporting on the 2001 general election.

Skills:

I am a highly-driven and conscientious individual who has a very keen eye for detail. I will always endeavour to go that extra mile to ensure I produce my best work at all times. I believe I have a strong news instinct, which has been further honed by newsroom experience I have gained during this postgraduate course. I love communicating with people, from authority figures to members of the public, something which I think is an essential part of being a good journalist. My technical skills in radio are good and I am proficient in audio cutting, editing and making packages using Burli and Adobe Audition. I also have 80wpm in Teeline shorthand and can touchtype at 70wpm.

Special Interests:
During my time at university I developed a keen interest in national and international politics, particularly the workings of the House of Commons and the European Union. I am also passionate about complementary medicine and take an interest in how this subject is covered in the media. I also follow sport and entertainment news.

Additional Information:

I have a full, clean driving licence and own a car.
