SECOND DAY'S PLAY
Yorkshire began the second day well with Lancashire only adding 24 runs to their overnight score before being all out for 328. But the rest of the morning session proved something of a disaster for Yorkshire with six wickets falling by lunch and only forty runs on the scoreboard.
After lunch things got no better for Yorkshire and two more wickets falling and only thirty four runs added to the total. The damage is being done by Hogg who has taken five wickets for just 29 runs.
However a battling partnership between Richard Pyrah who got his maiden century for Yorkshire and Ryan Sidebottom finally gave the crowd something to cheer as they helped take the Tykes to a score of 239, avoiding the follow-on.
And the Yorkshire crowd were still cheering as Lancashire began their second innings losing three wiickets for 33 runs at close of play.
FIRST DAY'S PLAY
Yorkshire won the toss and sent Lancashire into bat with ominous clouds hanging overhead.
Their decision to field seemed to be justified when Stephen Moore was bowled by Ryan Sidebottom lbw for zero after 11 minutes.
But the rain held off and Lancashire held their nerve. The batting order went through its repertoire of defensive strokes, making steady progress throughout the morning and afternoon.
The fifth wicket partnership of Steven Croft and Tom Smith was the hardest for Yorkshire bowlers to break down. It lasted for most of the afternoon and only ended when Ajmal Shahzad bowled out Croft on 54 in the last ball before tea.
Smith hung on to reach his half century before being caught by Jonathan Bairstow on 51 after a delivery from new boy Iain Wardlow.
Richard Pryah had a frustrating afternoon. Despite bowling 22 overs, he could only claim one scalp, the last of the day, when Gareth Cross went lbw on 30.
Shahzad fared a little better also bowling 22 overs and claiming two scalps including opener Paul Horton who was caught by Bairstow on 36.
Sidebottom bowled 19 overs and claimed three wickets including Karl Brown who was caught by Jacques Rudolph on 22 and Mark Chilton, who was caught by Tony McGrath on 33.
Adil Rashid bowled 11 overs but failed to take any wickets.
Lancashire’s tenth wicket partnership remains intact. Glen Chapple and Sajid Mahmood will take to the crease this morning at 11am. They are on 25 and 27 respectively.
All eyes will be on Jacques Rudolph when Yorkshire open their innings later today. It is hoped that the South African, who re-signed to Yorkshire at the beginning of July, will add much needed firepower the Yorkshire batting order.
The match will continue until Saturday afternoon.
The Tyke’s next championship game will be away to Hampshire on July 27.
