Horsforth Harriers sprint for success

The Horsforth 10k on September 25 is in its 27th year and has a 600 runner limit.

Ian Park, the editor of the club’s newsletter, looked forward to a busy schedule for the club.

“There are races a plenty at this time of year and I anticipate a large Harrier turnout for the Eccup 10 Miles, the Leeds Country Way at the beginning of September and the Yorkshire Veterans Grand Prix race series – the next races are June 28 and July 3,” he said.

The club already has one success under its belt with the Apperley Bridge Canter, now in its seventh year, having a record 492 entries competing for the 400 places available.

Race organiser Bob Foulkes said: “The event has been going from strength to strength and this year was exceptional.

“It is increasingly difficult to organise road running events due to the cost and police requirements – increasingly our big events are off-road, like the Apperley Bridge Canter.”

Club member Rob Furness finished highest in the race, ending in 28th place. “The Apperley Bridge Canter was a great race,” he said.

“It's the first time I've run in this event. I marshalled at the last one we hosted so I thought I'd give it a go.

“I was more than happy with my position and time, which was a personal best, especially considering I felt quite fresh at the end.”

He added: “Since joining the club last year, my running has improved drastically and I'm now improving all the time. None of this would have happened without the support of the club.”

The Horsforth Harriers have more than 170 members ranging from teenagers to pensioners and are based at Hall Park Cricket Club in Horsforth.
