Teenage golfers making strides

Horsforth golf club stars Rob Wilson, Liam Bennett and Greg Jennings are set to represent Yorkshire in the national finals of the inter-county team champiionship.

The teenagers defeated Hallamshire to earn their place at Woodhall Spa, the English golf union's headquarters, next month for a crack at the title.

The local boys received a claret jug, reminicent of the famous jug which is won at the Open Championship, to earn a two-night stop over in Lincolnshire for the county finals on August 20-21.

Two of the lads are currently in their first season of competition in the junior leagues and the side is also among the youngest competing in an under-18 competition, which is seen as a huge achievement by one and all at the club.

The boys all said they would like to one day hope to mirror the achievements of Rory McIlroy, who became the youngest ever golfer to claim a major by winning the US Open a few months ago at the tender age of 22.

And Horsforth's junior section organiser, Craig Jennings told Leeds Today: "They have done fantastically well already.

"We're going to Lincolnshire to win and we'd like to do it for Yorkshire."
