Applying for the tuition fee loan, maintenance loan and the maintenance grant

How do I apply?

You apply online at Directgov

When can I apply?

The application cycle is now open. Apply by the deadline of 31st May 2012 to ensure your funding is in place at the start of your course. Gets hints at tips on applying

More information on applyingVisit the Directgov Your Future website for more information on the application process.

When and how do I repay the loans?

Do I repay the tuition fee loan and maintenance loan back together or separately?

The tuition fee loan and the maintenance loan will be added together and treated as one loan rather than two.

When do I repay the loans?

The loans are repaid from the April after you have graduated or left your course. You repay when you are earningover £21,000 per year. If your income drops below £21,000 you stop making repayments. After 30 years, any amount not yet repaid will be written off (i.e. you will no longer need to repay it). No loans will be collected until after April 2016

How much do I repay?

You repay 9% of the amount you earn over £21,000. E.g. if you earn £25,000 you will repay £30 a month

How do I make repayments

Repayments are normally collected through the PAYE system (deducted from your wages)

What rate of interest am I charged?

Whilst you are studying and up until the April after you graduate or leave your course interest is applied at Retail Price Index (RPI + 3%)

From the April after you graduate or leave your course interest is applied at RPI to RPI + 3% on a sliding scale depending on what your income is between £21,000 and £41,000

If you are earning over £41,000 the interest is applied at RPI + 3%

If your income is below £21,000 interest is applied at the rate of inflation

If you have a dependent or a disability you may be eligible for additional grants

Previous Student Support
If you have defaulted on a repayment of a previous student loan or are in arrears on your payments then this may prevent you accessing any further support (e.g. you may not be entitled to receive any or part of the support detailed in this fact sheet.) You should contact the Student Loans Company if you think this may affect you.

EU Students
EU students are eligible for the tuition fee support and training bursary but are not eligible for support towards living costs. For further information please see the Directgov website

Overseas / International Students
Overseas students do not qualify for any statutory support from the UK Government. Overseas students are usually students who are not from the EU (or EEA or Switzerland).
