FAQs
Here you’ll find some frequently asked questions regarding our  services.

If you don't find your answer here then feel free to contact us: disability.support@leedstrinity.ac.uk.
    Is the service confidential?

The information you supply will be treated in confidence.

However we can’t guarantee absolute confidentiality of your information. In order to establish the support you need, we often have to discuss it with other people. With your permission, we disclose only information which is relevant and only to the people who need it.

What support is there for students?

We will draw up an individual Learning Support Plan with you to help you make the best use of the services available on campus and negotiate your own support requirements. This will include some of the points below:

    • Arrangements with lecturers for support in lectures and tutorials
    • We can help you if you need alternative arrangements for examinations and coursework eg extra time in examinations. See the section 'What support is available during exams?' below.
    • We can help you apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance if you are eligible.
    • We can help you appoint support workers if these have been recommended and approved.
    • We can advise you about dyslexia or other specific learning disabilities and offer specialist tutorials if appropriate.
    • We might, with your permission, talk to other departments about any individual support arrangements you may need.

What support do you provide for students with a mental health condition?

We recommend you contact Dyslexia & Disability Support to inform us about your condition. We can then offer you the services listed above.

You can also make use of the other services within Student Support including the Counselling Service, Student Health and Central Office.

We work closely together and we will ask you if you would like us to share your information between our services, which may help you to get best combination of support for your needs.

What if I haven't got my medical evidence or psychological report?

Contact us once you are registered as a student, we can arrange for a medical or psychological assessment.

In the meantime we can offer some support with your studies:

    • We will draw up a Learning Support Plan with you as explained above
    • Many tutors are willing to spend extra time with you explaining a topic or an assignment task
    • Many tutors supply handouts of the lectures or post them on the internal network
    • ICT facilities and assistive software are available in the Library/Learning Centre
    • The college Writers in Residence are available to all students for help with structuring assignments and written expression

Dyslexia & Disability Support can help you make use of any of these services.

What support is there for staff?

    • We support staff who have a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty.
    • We negotiate arrangements with staff who need adjustments to their working conditions or equipment.
    • We offer information and sources of help about disabilities, medical conditions or specific learning difficulties.

What support is available during exams?

At Leeds Trinity University College we are proud to offer a wide range of assessment methods, which increases the opportunity for all students to demonstrate their full potential. Students with disabilities, like all other students, have difficulties in some areas and strengths in others. The types of assessment already in place include examinations, assessed essays, group work and media production, to name but a few.

We can also make individual arrangements depending on your particular needs. Examples of these include extra time in examinations, use of a scribe or a laptop in examinations and, in exceptional circumstances, extensions to deadlines for coursework.

You will need to provide evidence of your entitlement to these concessions, for example a medical or psychologist’s report. You will need to supply relevant supporting evidence at least three weeks before the start of the examination period.

      What we cannot do

    • We can’t do your work for you! Students with disabilities often need to put in more work than other students, even though the support service is there to help you.
    • We can’t always respond immediately to your problem. We aim to act on your query within one week, but this often involves contacting other agencies who may be difficult to get hold of.
    • We can’t always arrange examination or assessment considerations. You will need to supply relevant supporting evidence at least three weeks before the start of the examination period. If you wish to extend an essay deadline, this has to be agreed by your tutors in advance.
    • We can’t guarantee absolute confidentiality of your information. In order to establish the support you need, we often have to discuss it with other people. With your permission, we disclose only information which is relevant and only to the people who need it.
    • We sometimes go on holiday! We will publicise these dates on our website and in our department, so please accept that sometimes there may be a delay in getting the service that you want.
