Money Related FAQs

I can see that I'm heading for financial trouble, what help is there?

•  See the Student Adviser (room AG09A, ext 173, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time), she can help with budgeting advice, offer debt repayment advice and help you decide if you might be eligible for help from the Access to Learning Fund.

My Student Loan is delayed and I've no money. Can anyone help?

•  See the Student Adviser (room AG09, ext 173, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time) - you may be eligible for a loan to tide you over.

Relationships Related FAQs

I'm finding it hard to study because my mind is on a relationship in which there are difficulties. How can I let my tutors know that I'm not at my best without getting into an embarrassing conversation?

•  Go to the Student Support Central Office (Judith Atkinson, AG09, ext 196, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time, appointments can also be made in advance). Judith can agree with you the wording for a 'notification of circumstances' email/memo that can be sent to your tutors with as much or as little detail as you want.

•  You might also wish to see a counsellor (Sue Jack, ext 192, room AG05D, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time, some appointments bookable). Having the chance to talk with someone who is trained to listen might help your mind to settle and concentrate.

Another student is making my life difficult. What can be done?

•  Go to the Student Support Central Office (Judith Atkinson, AG09, ext 196, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time, appointments can also be made in advance). Judith will explore the different approaches available.

Life in Halls FAQs

How do I get a fault in my room repaired (e.g. heating, window won't open/close etc)?

•  Use the online reporting system on the Accommodation section of the Student Intranet.

•  If, after a reasonable time, you have not had the fault rectified or information from the Buildings & Estates team to say what is happening, contact your Senior Resident. Ask him/her to take the case to a higher level and report back to you within an agreed time. Again, keep your own notes.

•  If, after a reasonable time, there is still no progress, see your Senior Resident again, explain the delay and ask him/her to see Student Support so that the case can be taken up by College staff. Ask your Senior Resident to report back to you within an agreed time. Again, keep your own notes.

•  In the very unlikely event that you cannot make progress with the help of your Senior Resident, gather all your notes together and go to Student Support Central Office (Judith Atkinson AG09, ext 196, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time, appointments can also be made in advance). Judith will take the matter up on your behalf and involve other relevant members of staff if necessary.

Someone near me is very noisy and it stops me studying and/or sleeping. How can I get some peace without making a 'complaint' that causes bad feeling?

•  You could approach the person yourself and politely describe the effect the noise is having upon you and ask this to be considered, sometimes people don't even realise they are being noisy until made aware!

•  See your Senior Resident and give him/her as much detail as you can e.g. when was this person noisy, does this person know you're unhappy with the noise? Ask your Senior Resident if s/he can have an informal word with the person, if necessary without revealing that you have talked with your Senior Resident. Agree a date to see your Senior Resident again so you can decide if the 'informal word' has worked.

•  If you are confronted with intolerable noise which you feel has to stop immediately and your Senior Resident is not in, contact 24 hour Security staff - ext 203.

•  If the person making the noise continues or starts again despite the efforts of your Senior Resident and/or Security, go to Student Support Central Office (Judith Atkinson AG09, ext 196, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time, appointments can also be made in advance). Take along as much written detailed information as possible e.g. times/dates when excessive noise made etc. Judith will then take the matter up for you.

•  Student Support staff do not have to mention your name when following up a noise problem.

Can I confidentially report someone for causing damage in my Hall?

•  Yes - often a matter can be fully resolved without your name being known by anyone outside Student Support. In rare cases, maintaining your confidentiality might weaken the evidence you provide. You would be made aware of this and no pressure would be placed upon you to allow your name to be known. If you want to find out more ..

•  Go to the Student Support Central Office (Judith Atkinson, AG09, ext 196, daily drop-in sessions Mon-Fri during term-time and appointments can also be made in advance). Take along as much written detailed information as possible. Judith will talk with you and take the matter up on your behalf whilst safeguarding your confidentiality.
