New Disabled Students Group
A number of disabled students at Leeds Trinity have formed a group through the Students' Union. They meet to discuss access issues across campus as well as planning social events open to all.
Supporting Students with Asperger Syndrome in Higher Education
For a number of years we have successfully supported a number of students with Asperger Syndrome on a range of courses. We decided to share our findings with others in Higher Education by hosting a one day conference in November 2011. Speakers included national authorities on Asperger Syndrome as well as our own students and staff.

new website to see the presentations and other information about Asperger Syndrome.
Dyslexia Screening Tool goes Online
At Leeds Trinity we encourage students to seek support if they are having difficulties managing their studies. Some students may be experiencing dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties which have not previously been identified. This informative screening tool is offered on campus and will soon be available to registered students on the Leeds Trinity Intranet.
New Braille Embosser
In September we purchased a Braille embossing machine, so we can now produce in-house documents in Braille on demand, making us more responsive to blind students, applicants and visitors.
Staff Development in 2010-11
Last year even more staff have attended training events to increase their awareness and improve the quality of support they offer to disabled students. All sessions have been well attended and include:
Disability Equality Training for managers
Disability Equality Training for Primary Education lecturers
Deaf Awareness for Primary Education lecturers
Mental Health awareness/Supporting students with mental health concerns
Supporting students with Dyslexia and Specific Learning Difficulties
An introduction to Asperger Syndrome
British Sign Language taster session
Visual Impairment awareness
Disability Network
In 2010-11 we established the Leeds Trinity Disability Network, which includes one member of staff from each department. All academic and support departments participate in the Network. Members of the Network share good practice with respect to disability and disabled students, and attend regular meetings and training. The aim of the Network is to improve disability equality throughout Leeds Trinity.
Building developments
Our new accommodation block, All Saints Court, is now complete. The first student residents have been wowed by the views from the upper floors and the high quality of living accommodation. There are 16 wheelchair accessible rooms and adapted kitchens for disabled residents.
Our newly refurbished Reception opened in September, offering improved access to the Chapel and other communal areas.
We have also made improvements to other parts of campus, which have helped to improve the accessibility of some of the teaching rooms as well as the fuel efficiency of the buildings.
National recognition for disabled students' support
A national study identified Leeds Trinity as one of the leading institutions in the support it offers for disabled students. Follow the link to find out more.
Equality Act 2010 now in force
The Equality Act 2010 consolidates and streamlines current anti-discrimination legislation. It also introduces new measures that have direct implications for higher education institutions.
We are now bound by the general public duty to promote equality in society for members of groups with Protected Characteristics. We are currently drafting the Leeds Trinity Equality Strategy and Action Plan for the next three years.
