Mark Hopkins’ (et al) article ‘Beneficial Effects of Exercise: Shifting the Focus from Body Weight to Other Markers of Health’ was published in British Journal of Sports Medicine, (43:12); and the (et al) article ‘Dual process action of exercise on appetite control: increase in orexigenic drive but improvement in meal-induced satiety’ was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (90); and the (et al) article ‘The relationship between substrate oxidation during exercise and the compensatory response in energy intake following medium term exercise training’ was published in Obesity Facts, 2 (S2).

Dr Claire Smith’s article ‘Triumphs Show – Ditching the Textbooks for the White Gloves: How trainee teachers learned to put history back into GCSE’ was published in Teaching History, Vol 135.

 

Jenny Stuart-Collins’ article ‘Learning Beyond the Classroom – Cycle Pathway’ was published in Physical Education Matters.

 

Prof Keith Johnson’s article ‘Corporate Sperm Count and Boiled Frogs: seeds of ideas to kindle innovation in students’ was published in The International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management; and the article ‘Spermatoid Lukewarm Tadpoles’ was published in The Orion Observatory.

 

Nigel Baker published 37 briefing papers on employment law.

 

Dr Jim Cross’s article ‘Unintended Street Art & Not Being 'Sold': the Poetry of the Torn Street Poster’ was published in the proceedings of the Conference of the International Journal of Arts and Sciences; and the article 'Dark Reflections, Monstrous Reflections: Essays on the Monster in Culture ' was published in the proceedings of the 4th Global Conference on Monsters and the Monstrous.

 

Dr Di Drummond’s review of Christian Wolmar: Blood, Iron and Gold: How the Railways Transformed the World was published in The BBC History Magazine.

 

Dr Ann-Marie Mealey’s reviews of Russell Pregeant: Knowing Good, Doing Truth, Engaging New Testament Ethics and of Anne Primavesi: Gaia and Climate Change: A theory of Gifts were published in Ethical Perspectives: Theological Book Review.

 

Dr Susan Elmer reviewed Evaluating Sure Start: Interprofessionalism and parental involvement in local programmes for Children and Society Vol. 23.

 

Revd Dr Jane de Gay presented two papers:

§         ‘Virginia Woolf, the Cathedral and the Gendering of Sacred Space’ to the 19th International Virginia Woolf Conference, Fordham University, New York;

Dr Di Drummond presented two papers:

§         ‘Using Contemporary films in teaching history’ to the Teaching and Learning about Contemporary British History Conference, Institute of Historical Research, University of London  

 

Dr John Hargreaves presented two papers:

  • ‘Selwyn Hughes (1928-2006): Mainstream or Marginalised’ to the Christianity and History Forum, Offa House, Leamington Spa
  • ‘From princely to popular history: Halifax history 1708-2008’ to the Local History After Hoskins Conference, University of Leicester

Dr Hannah Hunt presented two papers:

Dr Jon Dart presented a paper, co-written with Dean Naidoo: ‘Young, Gifted and … Naïve: Athletes and Social Networking’ to the BSA Annual Conference, Cardiff.

 

Amanda Fulford presented two papers:

  • ‘Flattery, Rhetoric or Parrhēsia, Conversations in Initial Teacher Education’. to the European Educational Research Association Conference, Vienna
  • ‘Teacher Education and Observational Feedback’ to the International Colloquium between the Katholieke Universitet, Leuven and the Institute of Education, University of London

 

Dr Mick Taylor presented a paper: ‘Indian Women entrepreneurs and employment – local economic impact and lessons for Green Economics’ to the Green Economics Institute Annual Conference, Mansfield College, Oxford.

 

Dr Jason Scott presented two papers:

  • ‘Merchandising Popular Culture 1870-1914’ to the Instruction, Amusement and Spectacle: Popular Shows and Exhibitions 1800-1914 conference, Exeter University 
  • ‘Sol Lesser: Tarzan, adventure docs and ‘independent’ production’ to the American Independent Cinema: Past, Present and Future conference Liverpool John Moores University.

 

Revd Dr Jane de Gay’s pamphlet Virginia Woolf and the Clergy: The Virginia Woolf Birthday Lecture 2009 was published by the Virginia Woolf Society of Great Britain.

 

Dr Paul Hardwick, Reader in English, was organiser for two conference sessions:

§         ‘The Margins of the Sacred: Papers in Memory of Elaine C. Block’, Kalamazoo

§         ‘Silent Speech on Medieval Misericords: Papers in Memory of Elaine C. Block’, Leeds

In addition, his poetry collection: Subterranean Homesick Yorkshire Blues was published by Indigo Dreams Press and he performs at many festivals including Glastonbury.

 

Beverley Forrest led a workshop on ‘Archaeology with primary pupils’ at the Historical Association Annual Conference, Leicester

 

Dr Jon Dart’s guide to Problem-based Learning in Sport and Leisure. Was published by the Higher Education Network: Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism.

 

Lloyd Spencer exhibited a project in documentary photography: Leeds By Night with accompanying catalogue and website.
