Journalism Trainees in Political Action
George Galloway
Broadcast trainees from the Leeds Trinity Broadcast Journalism postgraduate course were thrust into the heart of the biggest political upset of the year whilst reporting the count for the Bradford West by election.

Just ten weeks into his studies and covering the result for The Pulse of West Yorkshire trainee Josh Stead found himself conducting an exclusive interview with surprise victor and Respect Party founder George Galloway.

According to Josh “It was pretty much a case of being in the right place at the right time” but “the radio training kicked in and I was able to get about three minutes with him over a cup of coffee”.

Josh also applied his multimedia skills to getting pictures for The Pulse’s website, and had to edit his material in the field for use in the station’s breakfast programme.

Fellow trainees Alex Booth and Eddie Breslin were also busy on the night acting as runners for BBC Radio Leeds, grabbing guests and keeping track of the candidates’ movements. The three-hour election special was produced by former PG John Millward, whilst the BBC News Channel’s TV coverage of the by election was fronted by former Leeds Trinity trainee Ed Thomas.
