Leeds Trinity alumnus celebrates national music award success

​​​A Sports Journalism graduate from Leeds Trinity University is part of an award-winning independent record label that has recently been recognised at the 2019 Association of Independent Music (AIM) Awards.

Joe Cockburn, 23, from Bradford, works in digital marketing for Scruff of the Neck, a Manchester-based record label. He is responsible for managing the company’s social media platforms, which boasts over 220,000 followers, including an account for the record label’s annual music event – Year’s End Festival – which takes place in Manchester in December. Joe also oversees the social media accounts for one of the record label’s signed bands, Cassia, helping the band to reach the UK Top 40 in the album charts.

The record label has recently been announced as ‘Best Small Label’ at the AIM Awards, which in the past eight years has celebrated the work of artists including such as Adele, Stormzy, The Prodigy, London Grammar and Björk. The awards champion industry-leading creativity, innovation and performance shown by independent artists, labels and outstanding individuals.

Speaking of the label’s recent success, Joe said: “The AIM Awards has heightened our standing as a company and our networking opportunities. Everyone in the industry now knows who we are and what we do, and are quick to congratulate us. Going forward, it will help us to work with more bands, especially in 2020 which will see us release more music than ever before!”

Joe graduated with a first-class degree in Sports Journalism in 2017, completing a professional work placement at the World Snooker Championships as a press office assistant. After graduating, he was the Media and Communications Manager at Bradford Park Avenue Football Club, and in August 2018 he started working at Scruff of the Neck as a Marketing Assistant.

Reflecting on his time at Leeds Trinity University, Joe added: “Leeds Trinity was the best fit for me personally; I felt really at home, the tutors took a genuine interest in me and that carried a long way to making my decision to attend the university. I gained confidence when it came to talking to people, and this has helped me get to where I am today. I’ve put myself in the position to communicate effectively in my own unique style.”
