Develop, test and create a brand new game in 48 hours – that's the challenge at Escape Game Jam Leeds, taking place at Leeds Trinity University this month.
Known for helping to foster new friendships, increase confidence and enhance opportunities within the community, game jams encourage people to explore new technology, try new roles in development and test individual skills to design, develop, test and create a new game.
Escape Game Jam Leeds is part of celebrations for Global Game Jam 2018; the world's largest game jam event. Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development including puzzle-making, game flow, immersive design, narrative exploration and artistic expression.
The structure of a jam is usually that everyone gathers on Friday late afternoon, watches a short video keynote with advice from leading game developers, and then a secret theme is announced. All sites worldwide are then challenged to make games based on that same theme, with games to be completed by Sunday afternoon. In January 2017, 700 locations in 95 countries created over 7,000 games in one weekend!
At Leeds Trinity University, groups will be encouraged to design a new Escape Game – but all sorts of games will be developed around the world including video games, board games, card games and playground games.
Global Game Jam 2018 encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity. It is the growth of an idea that in today's heavily connected world, we could come together, be creative, share experiences and express ourselves in a multitude of ways using games.
