Our PGCE Courses will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills you’ll need to pursue a successful career in teaching.
PGCE Course Structure
The Leeds Trinity PGCE courses are structured in three stages to provide a gradual and supportive induction into teaching:
Stage 1 consists of centre-based training which provides a knowledge base on lesson planning, class management and assessment. Feedback from schools tells us that this prepares trainees exceptionally well for the start of school-based training in Stage 2 of the course.
Stage 2 is a a 12 week block from November to March of full time school-based training in a partnership school.
Stage 3 is the second school placement of 12 weeks from March to June. This enables trainees to experience two different types of schools and so prepares trainees well for starting as a Newly Qualified Teacher the following September.
Throughout both placements trainees are strongly supported by College and School-based tutors. Assessment during College-based training is by coursework and during School-based training by performance.
Our PGCE Courses offer an integrated professional and post-graduate level programme. The course is structured so that everyone studies towards the professional graduate qualification (PGCE) to gain QTS whilst also developing their post-graduate level critical thinking. Coursework completed for the professional level course support and informs the post-graduate assignment.
All Leeds Trinity PGCE trainees complete the first Critical Thinking module as they work towards gaining their Professional Graduate Certificate during their nine months course. The second module is completed during the Induction Year – the first year of teaching. Those trainees who successfully pass these modules, will start their teaching careers with a nationally recognised Post-Graduate Certificate, and 60 credits towards a full Masters degree in Education.
All PGCE trainees also have the option of taking 'Catholic Education' - a short course designed to prepare you for a possible career in Catholic Schools.
