Secondary Education

Leeds Trinity is a well-established and widely-respected institution with an excellent reputation for teacher education. Because of this reputation, we have strong relationships with schools across the UK. Our staff are expert practitioners with recent experience teaching in secondary or further education.
In partnership with schools, the Department for Secondary Education offers PGCE Courses in six secondary subject areas. We also work in close partnership with schools in the North of Leeds to offer school-centred initial teacher-training in four other subject areas - Leeds SCITT.
We provide Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses, particularly in mathematics, for those people who have the potential to be effective teachers but who need to improve their subject knowledge before they start a PGCE course.
From November 2011, we are also offering the Assessment-Only Route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This allows people currently working in schools as unqualifed teachers to gain QTS.
With the Department for Primary Education, and other colleagues from across the University College, we offer the MA in Education and support schools with the Teaching and Learning Academy.
PGCE Courses

All evidence indicates that the Leeds Trinity Secondary PGCE courses provide an excellent start to your teaching career. People do well on the courses and gain employment after completion, often in schools that work in partnership with Leeds Trinity.

Employment rates for graduates of our PGCE programmes are consistently above the national average with ex-students filling teaching posts in every corner of the UK.

OFSTED rate our partnership with schools and the overall management of the course as 'outstanding'.

The PGCE course is designed in three stages to provide a gradual and supportive induction into teaching and includes two 12-week placements of school-based training. Throughout both placements trainees are strongly supported by College and School-based tutors. Assessment during College-based training is by coursework and during School-based training by performance.

Our PGCE Courses offer an integrated professional and post-graduate level programme. The course is structured so that everyone studies towards the professional graduate qualification (PGCE) to gain QTS whilst also developing their post-graduate level critical thinking. Coursework completed for the professional level course support and informs the post-graduate assignment.

The MA Education

The MA in Education is a part time programme designed specifically to meet the professional and personal development needs of teachers and other education professionals. It is designed to support improvements in teaching and learning through critical reflective practice and practical enquiry.

The MA in Education is designed as a three year, part-time course with teaching in the evenings (Wednesdays or Thursdays) and on some weekends.

Assessment is through graded coursework assignments designed to enable participants to critically reflect on practice. The nature of the reflective practice assignments vary by module, but are designed to include written papers, small scale enquiries, presentations and design of learning materials.
