Gambia Trip 2011
At the end of May, 26 Primary Education students from both Early and Junior years took a trip to the Gambia to work at Bijilo school.
Over the three weeks, the students transformed the learning environment of primary age children. Originally a concrete shell, the students painted and decorated the classrooms with artwork.
The students also had the opportunity to teach some of the younger children part of the "jolly phonics" programme to assist them with their phonic and alphabetical knowledge. There was also the opportunity to work in a local nursery, which has been afforded to previous years’ trips.
Whilst there, the students also assisted local labourers with installing basic services such as drinking water taps, soakaways, and a reservoir in the school garden - this vital work will save water and help to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds.
Beth Webster (Primary Education Graduate 2011) said "Bijilo School is really basic and the people there are so resourceful and creative with what they have. It was fantastic to be able to help improve the school environment - it was hard physical work but I would jump at the chance to do it again."
Prior to the trip, the students had a fundraising drive to cover all costs and to raise extra money to donate straight to the school and charity. The majority of this extra money went towards a new water supply for the school. Fundraising efforts included a car wash, band nights, horse race nights, VIP raffles, Krispy Kreme doughnut sales, selling personalised hoodies and canvas bags to the graduating year and many more events!
The students also took a set of resources for the children. These included sports equipment of all varieties, puppets, pens and pencils, paper - a luxury for them - and old football kits and shirts which the children absolutely loved regardless of the team!!!
Forming and Sustaining ITT Partnerships in Museums, Galleries & Archives in a Time of Change
The conference organised by Leeds Museums & Galleries and Leeds Trinity University College was held on Tuesday 22 March 2011 in the Henry Moore Lecture Theatre, Leeds City Art Gallery. The event marked the end of the MLA funded project undertaken by these organisations.
