Professional Placements

The Professional Development and Placement modules are where theory and practice come together through a series of internal seminars and a period of placement with relevant organisations.

Professional Development and Placement Modules

These modules are much more than work experience. They enable you to develop your skills ready for employment when you graduate. The degrees in Media, Film and Television are all vocationally relevant courses providing you with knowledge and skills relevant to specific industries. The Professional Development and Placement modules are designed to enable you to develop your skills relating to careers in general such as researching possible careers and opportunities, approaching organisations and applying for jobs. In addition, this module gives you the opportunity to reflect on the many useful skills you already have.

You will normally undertake two 6-week periods (6 weeks at level 1 and 6 at level 2) of professional placement in a relevant organisation where you will be able to put the theory you have studied at Leeds Trinity into practice. This not only provides the opportunity for you to develop your skills, reflect on your learning and experience particular working environments, but also enables you to build your reputation, enhance your CV and develop networks. In our experience this is key to success in the careers market after graduation and is reflected in our excellent employment record (in our most recent survey of career destinations only 4% of respondents who had graduated with Media related degrees were still unemployed within 6 months of graduation).

Whilst we encourage you to use your own contacts to set up these placements as this is a good use of networking skills that you already might have, we also have an office dedicated to finding you a placement. The Employer Partnership Office [link] has a database of thousands of employers and organisations with whom we have had many successful placements and who welcome Leeds Trinity students.

Recent placements have taken place at:

Cactus TV

Leeds International Film Festival

Marie Curie Cancer Care

Manchester Evening News

Yorkshire Television

BBC Radio WM

Real Life TV

You may choose to stay in Leeds or you could work elsewhere in the UK. Overseas placements can also be approved so long as they meet our criteria for placements.

These short periods of professional work placements give you the chance to try out your preferred career field early in your studies. Having two such opportunities gives you the opportunity to test out alternative career options as well. Throughout the process you will be supervised by a designated tutor.
