About this course >

On this course, you’ll use ideas from subjects such as sociology, psychology, history, politics and film studies so there’s plenty of variety. Don’t worry if you’ve not studied all these yet. Our first year course gets you up to speed.

You’ll use reflections and experiences from your two professional placements too - in this course academic ideas are linked to what actually goes on in schools and universities. This professional experience is vital when applying for teacher training routes or when applying for careers in education.

Education Studies is UK focused, yet draws upon the international context. If you develop an interest in education overseas you could choose to study abroad during your degree. This life-enhancing opportunity offers a distinctive edge in the competitive international careers market.

Modules >

 Year 1

Whatever you’ve studied before, you will become familiar and confident in using ideas Education Studies draws upon from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, popular culture, history and philosophy. We do this by tackling themes rather than trudging through textbooks – you’ll consider why poorer children do less well in school, whether children have too few or too many rights, whether the National Curriculum is relevant or outdated, if ‘ability’ can ever be accurately measured. Year 1 culminates in a ​six-week professional placement where ideas meet practice and you can see whether that career you’re thinking about really is for you.

Year 2

As you develop your own ideas in the academic disciplines introduced last year, you now have more scope to let these shape your assignments. Do you have a better ​way of funding university education than students paying fees and could you ‘sell’ this to the public? What changes would we make to ensure schooling is fair and ethical for all? Should SATs be changed or abolished?

You will learn how to design your own research project, in preparation for Year 3.

There is a second professional placement ​to keep ideas in contact with professional practice and to help build your CV and inform your career choice.

Year 3

One third of your final year’s work and assessment is your choice - you could review an issue you’re interested in, go into professional contexts as a researcher or negotiate with professional educators to set up a project. Of course, we help throughout - you are allocated an individual supervisor.

You will select themes from your study of psychology relating to education and you examine the teaching profession through film, TV and literature. Radical ideas regarding educational practice and new ideas to support inclusion are considered.

You will graduate knowledgeable about the ideas of others and with ideas of your own. Most importantly, as an Education Studies graduate you have the confidence to be successful in a range of professional contexts.

Year 1 – 15.5% of scheduled learning and teaching; 197 hours of scheduled learning and teaching; 928 hours of independent teaching; 150 hours on placement

Year 2 - 14% of scheduled learning and teaching; 176 hours of scheduled learning and teaching; 929 hours of independent teaching; 150 hours on placement

Year 3 – 9.8% of scheduled learning and teaching; 118 hours of scheduled learning and teaching; 1,082 hours of independent teaching

We have a strong tradition of supporting student employability, with relevant skills embedded in the curriculum and professional work placements included in all our undergraduate programmes.

Modules on this programme are delivered through a combination of lectures and small group tutorials/seminars.  On this programme students undertake two 20-credit Personal Development and Placement modules, which feature six-week work placements in the summer term of Level 4 and the spring term of Level 5 sandwiched between periods of preparation and reflection on their learning.

At Level 6 high-achieving students are offered the choice of a 40-credit Dissertation/Project module to provide an extended opportunity for critical thinking skill development.

All students are offered opportunities to develop professional skills and links with employers and mentors and our alumni in their final year. You will have the opportunity throughout the programme to engage in extra-curricular activities and volunteering related to your graduate prospects.

We make extensive use of Moodle, Leeds Trinity's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support class sessions, and of e-resources to enable 24/7 access to learning materials from off-campus.

Year 1 - 90% coursework

Year 2 - 100% coursework

Year 3 - 100% coursework

A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed.  There is some scope for students to be involved in negotiating and evaluating some assessment.

In addition to each of your module assessments you will take a programme level assessment in each of the first and second year of your programme. This is designed to assess your understanding of everything you have been taught and to help you to understand how different elements of your degree fit together to make a coherent programme. 

You will be given weekly directed activities to complete in each module. These will contribute marks towards the final module assessment and reward engagement with the content of the module. They will also help you to check your understanding of what has been taught. Some of these activities may include further reading or preparation tasks for seminars. Some of the tasks will be completed online and may include quizzes which provide you with instant feedback on your understanding of the module content. In some modules lecturers may place some of the taught content on videos which you may be required to watch prior to attending a class. This will free up time for you to work on meaningful projects in class. 

On this programme there are some assessments which are marked on a pass/fail basis rather than graded. Please note that these assessments are excluded from the calculations made to produce the figures published in the Key Information Set (KIS) for this programme/subject.

Other requirements: For the old GCSE system we require grade C or above and for the new GCSE grading system we will accept grade 4 or higher in English Language.​

We welcome students with a wide range of qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and accredited Access courses.  We treat every application on its own merits; we value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement.

​If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter the course at Level 5 or 6. For more information, read our student guide to the Recognition of Prior Certified Learning.

We accept a variety of international equivalent qualifications and Leeds Trinity interviews international candidates. Typically, this is a call at a mutually convenient time. 

If individuals fall slightly short of the expected UCAS points needed for course entry, but have relevant experience and expertise in the sector, we would still welcome and consider such applications.

Additional Costs
​We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:
  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University 
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online

Placement Opportunities

Professional Work Placements take place in your first and second year. Placements can take place in a variety of organisations which can include schools, hospitals, the Sure Start Centre, within the University and the University Chaplaincy.
