Overview

Is it safe to release violent prisoners early? Can sex offenders ever be rehabilitated? Can we prevent young people from getting involved in crime? Is prison effective? If you are interested in the answers to these questions, then study Forensic Psychology at Leeds Trinity University.

Using our practitioner and academic backgrounds, we will help you to apply psychological theory to the study of criminal behaviour. Our lecturers have years of experience working within the Prison Service, Probation Service, NHS and the Ministry of Justice and we regularly invite leading professionals in the field to come and deliver specialist talks.

As well as studying the core areas of Psychology, you will also cover a range of Forensic Psychology topics within your specific programme modules, such as: theories of crime; risk and treatment of violent and sexual offenders; forensic mental health; self-harm and suicide in prison; offending behaviour programmes.

In your final year you can tailor your degree and choose options which may include the application of psychology to areas such as business, health, child development, counselling, mental health and sport psychology. In addition to this, Forensic Psychology students can choose to continue with an existing professional work placement and develop their employability skills further.

This degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society
(BPS) as conferring eligibility for Graduate Membership of the Society with the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, provided the minimum standard of qualification of a second
class honours is achieved. This is the first step to becoming a
Chartered Psychologist.​

This accreditation is important as it is a benchmark of quality, as defined by psychologists. GBC is an entry requirement for many BPS accredited postgraduate training courses, for example: Clinical, Forensic, Counselling, Educational, Occupational or Sport Psychology, one of the routes to becoming a practitioner as, for example, a Clinical Psychologist, a Forensic Psychologist, Counselling Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, Occupational Psychologist or a Sport Psychologist. These specialisms form part of the route to becoming a Chartered Psychologist (C. Psychol.).​

Year 1

In Year 1, in addition to studying Forensic Psychology, you will also study Psychological Research Methods, Psychology of Social Issues, Ethics, Society and Employability, Psychological Approaches to Personality and Intelligence. You will also undertake a Professional Placement and work in a group to do a Programme Level Assessment at the end of the year.

Year 2

In Year 2, in addition to studying Forensic Psychology in Theory and Practice, you will also study Research Methods 2, the Psychology of Social Issues 2, Psychological Issues in Gender and Emotion, and Mind and Brain. You will also undertake a Professional Placement.

Year 3

You will study Applied Forensic Psychology, and will undertake your Major Project. You will also have the opportunity to select three options from a range of optional modules such as Counselling, Forensic Practitioner, Business Psychology, Aspects of Health Psychology, Applying the Mind, Childhood and Society, Biopsychology of Stress and Health, Psychology, Mental Health and Distress and Psychology Special Subject ​​​extended essay.​

Most of the modules on this course are delivered through a combination of lectures, practical classes and small group tutorials/seminars. At Levels 5 and 6 visiting speakers who work in the Criminal Justice system come and speak. Forensic modules at Levels 5 and 6 are a mixture of lectures and workshops.

On this course students undertake two professional work placements in the summer term in Level 4 and Level 5, sandwiched between periods of preparation and reflection on their learning.

At Level 6 all students are required to undertake a 40-credit Major Research Project module to provide an extended opportunity for critical thinking skill development.

All students are offered opportunities to develop professional skills and links with employers and mentors and our alumni throughout their degree. All Forensic students are given opportunities to practice job interview skills with staff at Level 6. At Levels 5 and 6 there is a focus on teaching transferrable skills related to working with offenders within the Forensic Modules. You will also have the opportunity throughout the programme to engage in extra-curricular activities and volunteering related to your graduate prospects.

We make extensive use of Moodle, Leeds Trinity's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support class sessions, and of e-resources to enable 24/7 access to learning materials from off-campus. Forensic students are also offered a Virtual Summer School between Levels 4 and 5 to help them develop further skills.


Assessment


Breakdown of course assessment:

Year 1 – 78.3% coursework; 15% written exams; 6.7% practical exams

Year 2 – 86.7% coursework; 13.3% written exams

Year 3 - 100% coursework

A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed.  There is some scope for students to be involved in negotiating and evaluating some assessment.

Assessments tailored to this course for Forensic students include at Level 5 a group report on using the polygraph to assess a sex offender within the Probation system and an individual treatment case study of an internet sex offender. In addition most students undertake their 40-credit dissertation on a Forensic topic of their choice (subject to ethical approval).

In addition to each of your module assessments you will take a programme level assessment in each of the first and second year of your programme. This is designed to assess your understanding of everything you have been taught and to help you to understand how different elements of your degree fit together to make a coherent programme. 

You will be given weekly directed activities to complete in each module. These will contribute marks towards the final module assessment and reward engagement with the content of the module. They will also help you to check your understanding of what has been taught. Some of these activities may include further reading or preparation tasks for seminars. Some of the tasks will be completed online and may include quizzes which provide you with instant feedback on your understanding of the module content. In some modules lecturers may place some of the taught content on videos which you may be required to watch prior to attending a class. This will free up time for you to work on meaningful projects in class. 

On this programme there are some assessments which are marked on a pass/fail basis rather than graded. Please note that these assessments are excluded from the calculations made to produce the figures published in the Key Information Set (KIS) for this programme/subject.
Typically, our entry offer for this degree course is 112 UCAS tariff points.

Other requirements: For the old GCSE system we require grade C or above and for the new GCSE grading system we will accept grade 4 or higher in both English Language and Maths.​

We welcome students with a wide range of qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and accredited Access courses.  We treat every application on its own merits; we value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement.

​If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter the course at Level 5 or 6. For more information, read our student guide to the Recognition of Prior Certified Learning.

We accept a variety of international equivalent qualifications and Leeds Trinity interviews international candidates. Typically, this is a call at a mutually convenient time.

We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:
  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University 
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online
  • There is the opportunity ​to study abroad​ which will incur additional costs. This would be discussed on an individual basis

Professional Work Placements

Student placements are wide ranging in both scope and focus; often Forensic students seek placements with client groups so they can develop their practical experience. This can be within the NHS, working with local and national charities and NGOs, Local Schools, Community schemes, and Local Government.

You will do two placements of five weeks in each of your first two years at the end of the second semester and you may also undertake a forensic practice module in your final year.

The Prison Service is the largest employer of Forensic Psychologists but you can also work within the Ministry of Justice, the National Offender Management Service, the police, the NHS, private practice, voluntary organisations, charities, research and education.

Following the course, you will be qualified to study at postgraduate level in areas such as MSc Health and Wellbeing and MA Educationwhich we provide here at Leeds Trinity.
