The UK health and fitness industry is experiencing continual growth. This course will prepare you for a wealth of careers in the health and fitness industry, from working in public health and private gyms, to roles across the range of sectors within the health, fitness and leisure industry.

Course Information

You will learn about the psychology and sociology of health, exercise behaviour and anatomy, physiology and nutrition relating to exercise and health. You will also develop exercise instruction and practitioner skills. Business and marketing modules are included to help you develop skills to set up your own business after graduation and to work effectively in large businesses that operate across the health, fitness and leisure industry.

You will be given the opportunity to study for professional qualifications. These include gym-based instructor and personal training fitness qualifications as well as an Exercise Referral qualification, which allows registration onto Level 3 of the Register for Exercise Professionals (REPS).

You will undertake two professional work placements with the opportunity to take your first or second year placement in another country, usually within Europe. You can also study abroad, usually in your second year. We currently work with partners in Germany, Spain and Australia, where you can go for one semester to gain credits towards your degree.

Year 1

In your first year, you will learn about theories and concepts relevant to a broader understanding of exercise, health and fitness. Modules at this level cover six core themes; exercise (fitness), health, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, instructor/practitioner skills, and academic/graduate skills.

On completion of your first year, you will be expected to communicate knowledge of exercise, health and fitness in situations of limited complexity, in order to provide a foundation for further study in the subject. The compulsory practical placement at the end of the first year will give you the opportunity to put your knowledge and skills into practice.

Year 2

In your second year, you will be expected to apply knowledge of exercise, health and fitness to solve a range of problems. You will analyse and apply different theories and concepts and begin to appraise the evidence around broader exercise, health and fitness interventions and activities. You will also further deepen and consolidate your research skills, in preparation for your final year dissertation project.

Modules at this level cover themes including exercise (fitness and referral), health, business and marketing, advanced anatomy and physiology, applied nutrition for exercise performance, advanced instructor/practitioner skills, and additional academic/graduate skills.

The Advanced Personal Training module covers the knowledge and skills needed to design, manage and adapt a personal training programme for healthy individuals, and integrates the opportunity to gain the Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification. You will again have the opportunity to put your developing knowledge and skills into practice with your second compulsory placement.

Year 3

In your final year, you will learn to synthesise and critically evaluate key theories, concepts, principles and policies, and be able to develop a reasoned argument. The core themes begun in the first two years are further developed and your practical skills will be enhanced through completion of the Personal Trainer module, which integrates the Level 3 Skills Active Exercise Referral qualification.

The dissertation module requires you to plan, design, execute and communicate a sustained piece of independent work, which provides evidence of critical engagement. The multidisciplinary nature of the project means that, in addition to employing academic/graduate skills, the module enables you to focus on one or more of the key course themes, contributing towards sharpening your eventual career focus.

You have the opportunity to further strengthen your vocational experience and knowledge by selecting an option module from the disciplines of business, nutrition or exercise.

Undergraduates on the Exercise, Health and Fitness degree programme are taught by academic staff from within the department. Modules are delivered through a combination of methods including lectures, one-to-one and group tutorials, seminars, workshops, and practical sessions.

In addition, you will be required to complete at least two placements on your programme.


Assessment


Breakdown of course assessment:

Year 1 – 93.3% coursework; 6.7% written exams

Year 2 – 86.7% coursework; 5% written exams; 8.3% practical exams

Year 3 – 93.3% coursework; 6.7% practical exams

A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed.  There is some scope for students to be involved in negotiating and evaluating some assessment.

Assessment methods include small group teaching, weekly directed activities, group work and independent projects

In addition to each of your module assessments you will take a programme level assessment in each of the first and second year of your programme. This is designed to assess your understanding of everything you have been taught and to help you to understand how different elements of your degree fit together to make a coherent programme. 

You will be given weekly directed activities to complete in each module. These will contribute marks towards the final module assessment and reward engagement with the content of the module. They will also help you to check your understanding of what has been taught. Some of these activities may include further reading or preparation tasks for seminars. Some of the tasks will be completed online and may include quizzes which provide you with instant feedback on your understanding of the module content. In some modules lecturers may place some of the taught content on videos which you may be required to watch prior to attending a class. This will free up time for you to work on meaningful projects in class. 

On this programme there are some assessments which are marked on a pass/fail basis rather than graded. Please note that these assessments are excluded from the calculations made to produce the figures published in the Key Information Set (KIS) for this programme/subject.
Typically, our entry offer for this degree course is 112 UCAS tariff points.

Other requirements: For the old GCSE system we require grade C or above and for the new GCSE grading system we will accept grade 4 or higher in English Language, Maths and Science (or accepted equivalent qualifications)​.

We we​lcome students with a wide range of qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and accredited Access courses.  We treat every application on its own merits; we value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement.

​If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter the course at Level 5 or 6. For more information, read our student guide to the Recognition of Prior Certified Learning.

We accept a variety of international equivalent qualifications and Leeds Trinity interviews international candidates. Typically, this is a call at a mutually convenient time.

​We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:

  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University.  
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online

​​​​​​My name is Rachael McDonald and I'm the Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Exercise, Health and Fitness.   


I have a background in exercise sciences, and in particular, how exercise can be used to improve health and cognition. 

I am a REPS accredited Personal Trainer and also involved in research looking at how exercise can be used to improve memory and information processing. 

I teach core and options modules throughout the degree course.​​​

This is an exciting new course which allows students to explore and develop a theoretical understanding of exercise, health and fitness, as well as acquire fitness qualifications which are essential in the industry, at no extra cost​.​​

This degree prepares students for a range of careers in public health, health promotion in the NHS or local authorities, and a variety of roles within the health, fitness and leisure industries. It also prepares students for roles that help people to change their health behaviours, with a particular focus on nutrition and weight management.

Following the course, you will be qualified to study at postgraduate level in areas such as MA Sport Management and MSc Health and Wellbeingwhich we provide here at Leeds Trinity.
