​The MA in Sport Management aims to provide the opportunity for graduates and practitioners in sport and sport management related professions to engage in critical and intellectually rigorous investigation of the process of sport management from strategic planning through to practical implementation, in order to contribute to personal and career development.

Course Information

The course is unique in that it emphasises the applied nature of learning in sport management and allows students to draw upon their own vocational experiences and encourages them to apply the findings of the academic discipline in the workplace. The course has been designed alongside the requirements of employers and professional bodies in the area of sport management.

Part-time study is not available for international students on a Tier 4 Student Visa. 

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

The MA in Sport Management is to be run both full time (one year) or part time (two years) one (part time) or two evenings (full time) per week. Students would have access to a relevant vocational setting in order to carry out the applied professional practice components of the course (support being offered to those students without such a placement upon enrolment).

The rest of the study would be completed at home and online with the support of tutors and a peer network.


A range of assessment methods are used throughout the course, giving students the opportunity to draw on their professional experience as well as their academic learning. 

These include formal written essays, case study reports, physical activity interventions, research proposal, research critique, cost-benefit evaluations, reflective portfolio, on-line seminars and a major research project (dissertation).

Assessment titles are written to enable students to focus on their areas of specific work interest. 

Additional support in the form of on-line tutorials, and one-to-one support is provided to ensure all students, from all backgrounds, are able to develop the skills needed to successfully complete assessments at Masters level.​​
A good (2:2 or above) BA or BSc degree in a relevant area.
People with degrees in non-related subjects will also be considered, if they can demonstrate relevant paid or voluntary work experience and a commitment to study. Additionally, candidates without a BA/BSc may be considered where they can demonstrate evidence of equivalent prior learning and experience through Leeds Trinity assessment of APL.​​
If English is not your first language IELTS 6.0 (with no less than 5.5 in any component) or equivalent is the minimum requirement.

UK & EU Students:
Tuition fees cost £4,500 a year for this course in 2018-19. Part-time tuition fees would be pro-rated accordingly to the number of credits you're studying. These fees will be fixed for the duration of the degree course and not have to be paid upfront. Find out more

​We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:
  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University.  
  • You'll need to include pl​acement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online.

The course has covered a wide range of topics that are relevant to jobs in the workplace. I've thoroughly enjoyed the inclusion of the Accounting and Financial Management module, and believe I will use the content in my future job.

On completion of the MA students can apply to progress to an M.Phil, MbR or PhD. Postgraduate study in sports management will equip a wide range of potential sports practitioners with the necessary skills to lead and manage within the sports industry. This include: Private sector sports companies Sports governing bodies Further Study Education Enterprise – setting up own business.
Following the course, you will be qualified to study at postgraduate level in areas such as MA Sport Management and PGCE courseswhich we provide here at Leeds Trinity.
