Are you interested in the power of words? Do you like analysing the way language is used in the media and in all kinds of different texts? Do you want to learn more about creating your own texts and media?

English and Media is a vocational degree that gives you the opportunity to combine the study of English literature and creative writing with the theory and practice of multi-media production.

About this course >

We'll show you how great writers, from Shakespeare to Toni Morrison, have used words to express themselves and to influence the world around them. At the same time, you'll study how words, images and technology are combined to such powerful effect in digital media.

You'll develop practical skills in media production, using the latest media formatting equipment and software. You can specialise in a particular area of production, whether that's radio and podcasts, digital effects or transmedia.

You'll also have the opportunity to create your own literature and learn how to give and receive criticism in creative writing workshops.

Putting your creative and practical skills into practice, you'll complete two professional work placements. You'll gain invaluable professional experience and make contacts that could help you build your future career. Whether you want to work in the media, train to be a teacher, or work in a field where good communication skills are needed, English and Media has a lot to offer you.

​Following the course, you will be qualified to study at postgraduate level in areas such as MA Creative Writing, MA Marketing and MA Journalism, which we provide here at Leeds Trinity. You will also be eligible to apply to one of the postgraduate teacher training qualifications (Primary or Secondary English) which we offer at Leeds Trinity.

Year 1

In Year 1 you’ll gain confidence in researching texts and their contexts, and discovering the fantastic range of online and library-based resources available to help you do this, through our Research and Essay- Writing module. Through Mapping Genres you will explore some great texts from the past and learn to compare them to popular modern texts in the same genres. On the media side, you will learn a range of concepts and techniques in Analysing Media, and then you can decide whether to learn more about the practical side of media production through Radio and Podcast Production and Television Production, or explore the potential of digital media as a vehicle for your creativity through Online Storytelling. At the end of the year you will complete a practical project and go on a professional placement to help you develop your future employability and relate your studies to the world of work.

Year 2

During the second year, analysis and creativity are combined in Roots of Stories, which looks at myths and archetypes which are constantly being reworked in texts and films, and which you can also experiment with in your own writing. You will learn more about how to analyse, discuss and write about media in Researching Media, Film and Culture and Media, Culture, Society. You will choose whether to take another module on the production side, such as Digital Narratives, or Digital Effects, or continue your interest in Radio and Podcast Production. Or you can choose a module on the English side such as 20th Century Literature or Creative Writing Workshop. You will also go on a professional placement to gain valuable skills and experience to take forward to your future career.

Year 3

In your final year all the research and analytical skills you have developed will go into producing a major piece of work: either a Dissertation on a literary topic or a piece of Media Film and Culture Research. Whichever you choose, you will have the freedom to work independently, with help and advice from our expert staff. During this year you also choose your other modules from a wide range available, on both the Film and Media sides, on topics such as The Child and the Book, Postmodern Fiction, Science Fiction or Creative Media. You can also complete a major production project, through Transmedia Production, or Radio and Podcast Production, to go alongside your Dissertation and show how you have fully developed both your research and your practical skills.

Most of the modules on this programme are delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, individual tutorials; and television and radio studio workshops.

On this programme students undertake two 20-credit Personal Development and Placement modules with the option to take a third. As part of the Level 4 module students will participate in a group project exploring and developing project management and teamwork skills. In the spring term of Level 5 there is a six-week work placement sandwiched between periods of preparation and reflection on students' learning. Finally, students can choose to take a Level 6 option module in which they negotiate and complete an individual project for an external institution or company.

At Level 6 all students complete a 40-credit Media Research project and a production project; students also have the opportunity to complete a 20-credit English Research Report, developing skills of literary analysis and critical thinking.

Students are offered opportunities throughout the programme to develop professional skills and links with employers and mentors, to engage in extra-curricular activities and volunteering related to their graduate prospects, and to publish and read their creative work.

We make extensive use of Moodle, Leeds Trinity's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support class sessions, and of e-resources to enable 24/7 access to learning materials from off-campus.


A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed. There is some scope for students to be involved in negotiating and evaluating some assessment.

Assessments tailored to this programme include online quizzes, short individual and group presentations, and production of media artefacts.

In addition to each of your module assessments you will take a programme level assessment in each of the first and second year of your programme. This is designed to assess your understanding of everything you have been taught and to help you to understand how different elements of your degree fit together to make a coherent programme. 

You will be given weekly directed activities to complete in each module. These will contribute marks towards the final module assessment and reward engagement with the content of the module. They will also help you to check your understanding of what has been taught. Some of these activities may include further reading or preparation tasks for seminars. Some of the tasks will be completed online and may include quizzes which provide you with instant feedback on your understanding of the module content. In some modules lecturers may place some of the taught content on videos which you may be required to watch prior to attending a class. This will free up time for you to work on meaningful projects in class. 

On this programme there are some assessments which are marked on a pass/fail basis rather than graded. Please note that these assessments are excluded from the calculations made to produce the figures published in the Key Information Set (KIS) for this programme/subject.

Entry Requirements >

Typically, our entry offer for this degree course is 104 UCAS tariff points.

Other requirements: For the old GCSE system we require grade C or above and for the new GCSE grading system we will accept grade 4 or higher in English Language​.​ ​ In addition, applicants usually have an A Level (or equivalent) in an English-related subject but this is not essential.​

We welcome students with a wide range of qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and accredited Access courses. We treat every application on its own merits; we value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement.

​If you have achieved a qualification such as a foundation degree or HND, or have gained credit at another higher education institution, you may be able to enter the course at Level 5 or 6. For more information, read our student guide to the Recognition of Prior Certified Learning.

We accept a variety of international equivalent qualifications and Leeds Trinity interviews international candidates. Typically, this is a call at a mutually convenient time.

UK & EU Students:

Additional Costs

​​We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:

  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015.

  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University.  

  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 

  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online.

Placement Opportunities

We are one of only a few UK universities to build professional work placements into every degree. You'll complete two professional work placements, which will give you the chance to graduate with up to three months' professional work experience without having to take a sandwich year out.

Our students have completed their placements at a wide range of organisations – from film production companies and recording studios, to local newspapers and MPs' offices. If you're interested in teaching, you could also experience working in a primary or secondary school.
