Course Information

This degree, which has been developed in consultation with major health and social care employers, embeds the principles of placing service users at the front and centre of their health and care. It aims to develop students' skills, knowledge and behaviours for working in a complex, multi-agency framework, alongside developing their individual capacity and resilience for working in this field.

The course is built around four key strands - individualised health and care provision, student personal and professional development, developing our students' ability to manage in health and care, and finally building academic skills for evidence based practice and future research. Underpinning all of these is the opportunity to build practical experience through embedded work placements at every year of the degree.

Graduates from this programme will be highly employable in the health and social care field, and prepared for further study as an alternative progression route. There are a number of international and study abroad opportunities. These include overseas work placements, as well as the option to study abroad during the second year of the course.

Year 1: You will be introduced to some of the core fundamentals that inform work and study in health and social care. This will include understanding the broader factors that influence health decision making, safeguarding issues for service users, and ethical issues for working with diverse clients. Academic and research skills will be integrated throughout your programme, and you will also be introduced to the fundamentals of working within a professional capacity, including reflective learning and self-evaluation. You will finish the year with a practical placement where you will have the opportunity to apply your learning in a practical setting.

Year 2: You will explore contemporary health and social care delivery frameworks and structures in order to understand and appraise the effectiveness of multi-disciplinary working. You will explore the centrality of the service user and models of person-centred provision, and you will examine the influence of health behaviours on health across the lifespan. Alongside this, you will extend your understanding and knowledge of working in a professional capacity with a strong strand of professional development including management skills such as project management, self-reflection and team work. Again, through the placement element you will put your learning into practice, and in this year have the opportunity of carrying out placements overseas.

Year 3: Your final year will embed critical evaluation of health and social care practice and theory across all modules and will consolidate your knowledge of health and social care, your own professional practice and your leadership and management skills and knowledge. You will choose options that allow you to pursue your specific interests, such as young people and families, or adults and ageing populations. Your professional development will be enhanced through studying resilience and mental toughness, and your leadership ability will be enhanced through a strand which explores leadership, financial and facility management and managing for diversity.  You will also have the option of a further practical placement and will bring your learning together with the delivery of an extended dissertation or work based learning project.

Undergraduates on the Exercise, Health and Fitness degree programme are taught by academic staff from within the department. Modules are delivered through a combination of methods including lectures, one-to-one and group tutorials, seminars, workshops, and practical sessions.

In addition, you will be required to complete at least two placements on your programme.

A variety of assessment methods are used, matched to the learning outcomes for the programme, to enable students to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills that they have developed.  There is some scope for students to be involved in negotiating and evaluating some assessment.

Assessment methods include small group teaching, weekly directed activities, group work and independent projects

In addition to each of your module assessments you will take a programme level assessment in each of the first and second year of your programme. This is designed to assess your understanding of everything you have been taught and to help you to understand how different elements of your degree fit together to make a coherent programme. 

You will be given weekly directed activities to complete in each module. These will contribute marks towards the final module assessment and reward engagement with the content of the module. They will also help you to check your understanding of what has been taught. Some of these activities may include further reading or preparation tasks for seminars. Some of the tasks will be completed online and may include quizzes which provide you with instant feedback on your understanding of the module content. In some modules lecturers may place some of the taught content on videos which you may be required to watch prior to attending a class. This will free up time for you to work on meaningful projects in class. 

On this programme there are some assessments which are marked on a pass/fail basis rather than graded. Please note that these assessments are excluded from the calculations made to produce the figures published in the Key Information Set (KIS) for this programme/subject.
Typically, our entry offer for this degree course is 112 UCAS tariff points.

Other requirements: For the old GCSE system we require grade C or above and for the new GCSE grading system we will accept grade 4 or higher in English Language, Maths and Science (or accepted equivalent qualifications)​.

​We we​lcome students with a wide range of qualifications such as A Levels, BTECs and accredited Access courses.  We treat every application on its own merits; we value highly the experience you illustrate in your personal statement.

​We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:

  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • Field trips may occur during this course and either fully or partly subsidised by the University.  
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online

Professional Work Placements

​Placements will be completed in a range of health and social care settings. These may include placements in facilities that provide residential care for adults and older adults, working with youth work teams, working within the NHS alongside Band 5 practitioners, working in children and family centres, or working for charities and non-government agencies. There are two six week compulsory placements which take place at the end of Year 1 and Year 2 of the degree, with an optional third placement in the final year as part of the Professional Learning Through Work module. As an alternative to the Year 2 placement, students can complete a period of volunteering which could take place over the duration of the second year.

Graduates from this programme will be well equipped to work in a range of job roles including children's services, lifestyle and wellbeing within care facilities, children and family support, community wellbeing, health improvement and social work.

The programme also offers opportunity to acquire further training in nursing and professionals allied to medicine and social care.

Opportunities for further study on to Masters by Research - or PhD studentships are also available at Leeds Trinity University.

Following the course, you will be qualified to study at postgraduate level in areas such as MA Sport Management and MSc Health and Wellbeingwhich we provide here at Leeds Trinity.
