Overview

This PGCE programme is for graduates who wish to teach Business in secondary schools. Leeds Trinity University offers Initial Teacher Training courses in a number of subject areas. Students are registered for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7), and are recommended for the award of QTS to the DfE/NCTL.
  • Leeds Trinity PGCE courses are well-established, with a longstanding reputation for excellence. Trainees do well on our courses, gain employment and progress in their careers.
  • The Leeds Trinity University PGCE Business programme offers well-structured training to teach pupils across the age and ability range in a diversity of schools, denominational and non-denominational

Course Information

You already know that Business is a vital and important subject that everyone needs to understand. Whether in their roles as consumers, employees, lenders, tax payers or shareholders people who understand why world of business works the way that it does will be better informed as well as more successful.
Business teachers have the opportunity to guide pupils in developing their understanding of business and the economy, as well as enhancing their decision making skills. Firmly based on consideration of theoretical concepts through real world applications in business and in the classroom, this course is designed to give you a flying start in the business teaching profession.

Assessment
During Stage 1 your knowledge and understanding will be assessed by focused written assignments.

During Stages 2 and 3 your progress against the Teachers’ Standards will be assessed through your performance as a teacher in schools. Classroom teachers will evaluate your lesson plans, observe your lessons and review your marking. Your self-review and attendance at training activities will support your development.

  • A good honours degree (2ii or above) with a significant proportion of Business, Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance and/or Economics.​
  • GCSE Grade C (or accepted equivalent) English and Mathematics. We offer our GCSE equivalency tests to those who have a conditional place on the course but do not already have these qualifications.
  • Suitable personal and intellectual qualities required for teaching in secondary schools.
  • Commitment, attitudes and values appropriate to that of a secondary teacher.
  • Ability to read effectively and communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written Standard English, and to have passed the DFE Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy. ​Find out more on the STA Education website.
  • The capacity to meet the Secretary of State's requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach. All successful candidates will be asked to complete a health assessment as part of the entry conditions to the programme.​
NB. Candidates with third class honours degrees will be considered on an individual basis, and normally only if candidates have additional qualifications and/or significant relevant professional experience.

In addition to the above essential entry requirements, successful applicants also tend to have:
  • Advanced level qualificati​ons (or equivalent) in Business, Economics.
  • Experience of observing the teaching of Business and/or Economics in a secondary school in this country.
We encourage applications from students who may not match the academic profile outlined above but who can demonstrate that they have developed their subject expertise by working for a substantial period of time supporting the teaching of Business and/or Economics in a secondary school context.

 
An offer of a place is subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure Certificate and a satisfactory medical. If you are offered a place you will be sent the information regarding both of these checks.

UK & EU Students:

​Leeds Trinity postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) tuition fees are £9,000 in 2016–17. Tuition fees may rise with inflation in future years. ​

You will not have to pay these fees upfront. Eligible UK and EU students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees from the government.

UK students on non-salaried places studying full-time can apply for a package of maintenance funding from the government to help with general living costs and additional funding if you have children and/or a disability.   

English and EU students can apply and find out more information at www.gov.uk/studentfinance. This website also has a calculator which gives you an estimate of what you will receive.
We advise students to budget for the following in addition to annual tuition fees:
  • Recommended and required reading lists will be provided at the start of your course. All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. We recommend £390* as an average annual budget for learning resources if you decide this is for you. *This figure is based on the Department of Work and Pensions course costs allowance 2015
  • You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. 
  • The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online.

​​​As well as being the PGCE Business Tutor, I also work with School Direct Local trainees. 


This means that I am responsible for working with School Direct partnerships and ensuring that the quality of placement experiences is met, working with trainees as their link tutor and m​​eeting with trainees at appropriate points of the course. 

I enjoy working with every trainee and supporting them to becoming skilled and confident in their teaching so that they are able to enter the teaching profession feeling highly prepared and enthusiastic, with a solid foundation upon which to build their career.​​​

The PGCE Business course constantly responds to the needs of the teaching profession to ensure that all trainees, through sessions held at the University and placements in school, feel fully prepared to enter the teaching profession as confident, skilled and independent, reflective practitioners. 
The course also provides the opportunity to be awarded a PG Cert from which credits can be used towards further Masters study.

Choosing Leeds Trinity was rewarding and fulfilling, and it allowed me to enter the teaching profession feeling confident and prepared within less than two weeks of qualifying as a teacher.

You can choose to study PGCE Business via the following routes:​
  • The Leeds Trinity University PGCE Provider-led programme led by the University with placements in partnership schools. Trainees spend in excess of 24 weeks in schools, undertaking two contrasting teaching placements. The Provider-led secondary programme will be either 11-16 age range (with post 16 enhancement) or 14-19 age range for Business Education.
  • PGCE School Direct programmes are a partnership between Leeds Trinity University and schools. Trainees normally spend most of their time in schools, with tuition provided by University tutors based at the school, and expert school teachers. The School Direct routes are 11-16 age range (with post 16 enhancement), unless designated 14-19 for particular subjects.
