Our Rugby League 1st team have had another intense season in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Northern 2B league. Seven high scoring victories and just one loss saw the team finish second in the league and pushing for promotion, narrowly losing out to Durham University.
We asked Sarah Todd, Sport Development Manager, to provide an insight on the team's season:
Throughout the 2017/18 season, the Rugby League 1st team, known as the Leeds Trinity Titans, competed in the BUCS Northern Conference Cup, as well as the league, and reached the last 16 where they were knocked out by Salford 1sts, a team who ended up in the final.
Despite missing out on league promotion, the team finished the league in high spirits, ending the season with an away win at Sheffield Hallam, 60-6 – their highest scoring match of the year.
The team are consistently finishing in the top three of Northern 2B and regularly reach the quarter finals of the cup, showcasing their talent year-on-year. Over the past three years, the team have had multiple high-flyers, with several members of the squad having represented Yorkshire Universities, and others competing in the Rugby League Student World Cup in Australia in 2017 as players for Scotland and Wales.
Looking ahead to the next season, Chris Rushworth, 2018/19 team Captain, had this to say:
"All the team are really excited for the coming season, Northern 2B is a challenging league, and this season there are a few new teams in there to face, too. We'll be working towards gaining promotion again, as well as a good cup run. Hopefully we'll be having a good intake of freshers to the University to join the squad. In my two seasons so far at Leeds Trinity we've been one game away from winning the league, so going into my final season I want that promotion!"
