We caught up with Sarah Todd, Sport Development Manager, to find out more about their recent promotion:
After beating Northumbria (their biggest rivals) both home and away, the team travelled to York for the final match of the season in a must-win fixture. After battling the wind on a 3G pitch at the side of a dual carriageway, the team came away with a nail-biting victory of 1-0.
The team is an extremely talented one, with three members having been supported by the 'Talented Athlete Support Package', which aims to ensure our high-performing athletes are able to manage their dual careers in both their studies and their sport.
In July 2018, five members of the team will leave Leeds Trinity, having played every first team game for the University over the span of their three year tenure and having gained league promotions in two of those seasons, a fantastic achievement to take away.
Dayle Coleing, captain of the team, who also plays for Gibraltar under 21's, recently spoke of the success:
"To finish my University career with promotion into Division 1 is everything I could have hoped for. It was a tough season, but the team worked so hard to gain promotion. It feels great to be able to say that we secured promotion two out of the three years whilst studying at Leeds Trinity, and for the team to be playing Division 1 next year is unbelievable."
Not only do the team finish the season with a BUCS promotion, they also received the coveted title of 'Team of the Year' from the 2018 Leeds Trinity Students' Union Sports and Societies Awards.
Sarah Todd, the University Sport Development Manager, said "The Men's Football 1st team have had an unbelievable season. We are extremely proud of the team and their achievements. For such a small University to be playing Division 1 sport is unheard of and it is a testament to their hard work and outstanding talent. We're all really excited for the upcoming season."
