About Leeds
Leeds is a great place to live. It is one of the most exciting and fast growing cities in the UK – but it still has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. From its bustling university campuses to the student-friendly bars and cafés of Headingley, the countless student nights that are hosted around town to the annual Leeds Music Festival – student life in Leeds needs to be lived to be fully appreciated.
Student Central
Leeds is internationally recognised as one of the UK’s best university cities. It has a student population of over 200,000, and was voted 'Best university destination in the UK' by The Independent.
Leeds is something of a cultural centre too, and the city's students play their part. There are three art-house cinemas, the internationally acclaimed Yorkshire Playhouse and more live music venues than you can shake a stick at.
The city's safe friendly environment, fantastic nightlife and relatively low cost of living make it the ideal location to live and learn. Leeds was recently named 'The most cost effective place to study in Britain' by the RBS Student Living Index 2007.
The Knightsbridge of the North
Leeds has some of the UK’s best shopping outside of London. From the retro shops of Headingley and the vintage stores on Boar Lane to the designer labels and high-fashion boutiques of the renowned Victoria Quarter, you’re guaranteed to find something to suit every style and every overdraft limit!
Sport
Leeds is a dream destination for students with a love of sport. Headingley, one of the city's main student areas, is home to the world famous Yorkshire County Cricket Club and rugby league champions, the Leeds Rhinos. And if you’re a football fan, Leeds United play across town at Elland Road.
If you’d prefer to get involved in sport, rather than sitting around watching it, Leeds offers something for everyone. On top of all the football, rugby and cricket teams, there is a canoeing club down on the River Aire in Kirkstall, lots of gyms, a few well-regarded martial arts centres and the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park is just outside of town. The Dales are a great place for climbing, trekking, fishing, pot-holing, road biking, mountain biking… in fact if you like the great outdoors, you’ll love the Dales.
A Place to Stay?
Leeds is the sort of place you just won’t want to leave. Many students come here for 3 years, but end up staying for much longer. It is a great place to start a career. It’s home to leading financial institutions like the Royal Bank of Scotland and KPMG, some of the best design and marketing agencies in the country, a thriving manufacturing industry and over the last two decades more jobs have been created in Leeds than anywhere outside of London.
